Citizen Science – information is power provides technical and programmatic support for community stream monitoring shale gas stream monitoring developed in 2010 provides monitoring plan, training, protocols new structure built to provide organizational and NY specific programmatic support organizes trainings, supports ongoing monitoring efforts, coordinates response to environmental challenges

  4. Shale Gas Monitoring Protocol • Kits are leased (for free) to volunteer monitoring teams • Teams visit sites 1-4 times a month • Record current and recent weather, stage, and conductivity • Enter measurements into online database • 2x a year, QA/QC and certified lab testing of Ba/Sr

  5. QA/QC • Lab Providers • measure conductivity for split sample analysis • preserve samples • submit for certified lab analysis • Data Monitors • review lab split sample results and follow up with teams • inspect data from each team and stream for internal consistency

  6. Certified Lab Analysis • EPA, NYS certified for stream water analysis • Measure Barium and Strontium • Indicator for water from shale formations • Use for baseline • Grab sample if signs of a spill

  7. Baseline data – scope • 6 trainings over 2 years • 104 sentinels across 75 sites in 9 counties • 1273 individual observations
