  1. Assignment #1: Non-Objective Art using the Elements of Design

  2. This introductory assignment will allow you to begin learning how to combine the elements of design together in a variety of ways to create an interesting and original work of non-objective art. Recall that non-objective art (or abstract art) does not contain any recognizable imagery, therefore the focus will be on the design and composition of the artwork.

  3. This project will assess you on your understanding of the elements of design, as well as your ability to apply what you have learned to create a triptych (a work of art that contains three separate panels) that shows an understanding of the proper care and presentation of an artwork.

  4. Key Learning Goals: • learn how to create non-objective artwork • begin combining elements together to create 3 interesting and original works of art • create a successful composition and a focal point in an artwork • learn the proper care and presentation of an artwork

  5. 1. Create abstract "doodles" of each individual element. Use the boxes below to complete this step. Note that your preparation/exploration work will be included in the final grade for this assignment.

  6. 2. Combine two or more elements to create three unique non-objective compositions. Use the space provided to complete your rough compositions before completing the final good copies. List the elements used in the spaces below each box. Be sure to use each element AT LEAST ONCE throughout the three compositions. Spend some time planning the composition of each image and try to include a focal point (a main area of interest) in each image. Remember to focus on NON-OBJECTIVE designs so avoid drawing any scenes that you might find in real life.

  7. 3. Use the good copy paper provided in class to complete the three final images you have designed. You may choose to use a variety of media to complete these images, but be careful when adding textured pieces. Make sure it is not too heavy/large to attach to the paper; low-relief textured pieces such as sandpaper or textured paper will work well. Once finished, assemble the three images into a finished triptych by neatly mounting them onto a piece of black bristol board. Be sure to use a ruler to ensure that the borders are even all the way around. Watch out for glue smudges. Your final work should be "gallery ready".
