  1. Living WatersWednesday TeachingC. Holoman-#14The commonwealthFeast of CreationThe Weekly SabbathJanuary 14 2009

  2. Encouragement to attendSunday School, 9:30 AM weekly.Encourage diligence in youRead the Bible Through in a Yeartract.

  3. Ephesians 2:12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ.

  4. When Paul delivered the gospel to people who already believed in the scriptures, including creation, he always began at Jesus and gave the gospel of the cross and resurrection. But to those who did not know or believe in the scriptures, he began with the creation truth.

  5. Hebrews 1:1 In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power.

  6. Exploring the concept of‘the commonwealth’ of the people of God.The word Sabbath or Sabbaths over 150 times in the Bible in reference to the Sabbath 7th Day.

  7. It is a fair question to ask, just how the concept of God as Creator entered the Hebrew mind and how was it maintained as a dominate theme? The place of creation in biblical faith and evangelism.

  8. Exodus 31:12 And the LORD said to Moses, 13 "Say to the people of Israel, `You shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you.

  9. Exodus 31:14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you; every one who profanes it shall be put to death; whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest (“day of quieting of the heart” ), holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death.(sacred time, does not belong to you, similar to the tithe in Malachi 3:8)

  10. Exodus 31:16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign for ever betweenme and the people(an understanding of commonwealth identity) of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.'

  11. We misplace the Sabbath by placing the emphasis on the absence of work-activity, i.e. the emptiness-no work of the day rather that the fullness-attentiveness-content’. The content-remembrance of the Sabbath as sign of commonwealth identity, covenant relationship, God work of holiness, remembrance of God’s supernatural creation of existence, worship-teaching content of the day, and of worship and teaching.

  12. "All the Lev 23 feast days were Sabbath days. All the Feasts are feasts of remembrance.Ps 111:4 “Remembrance creates his miraculous deeds-they literally happen again in recollection, because of their persistent effectiveness .”Thus the remembrance content is gives the day its significance.

  13. Deuteronomy 5:15 You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out thence with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.A salvation memorial like Passover..

  14. All the Lev 23 feast days were Sabbath days. All the feasts are feasts of remembrance and embody both acts of salvation and honoring God as the creator of our existence. It is through these feasts of remembrance that we maintain a working consciousness of these acts and revelations of God.

  15. Vehicles of imparting lifeEzekiel 20:21 But the children rebelled against me; they did not walk in my statutes, and were not careful to observe my ordinances, by whose observance man shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths. "Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.

  16. From the 10 CommandmentsExodus 20:8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God; .. 11 for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

  17. Isaiah 56:6 "And the foreigners (Gentiles) who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, every one who keeps the Sabbath, and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant -- 7 these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

  18. Isaiah 58:13 "If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; 14 then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father (Gen 28:13-14), for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

  19. The heritage of Jacob Genesis 28:13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said (to Jacob), "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; 14 and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves.

  20. Jeremiah 17:24 "`But if you listen to me, says the LORD, and bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy and do no work on it, 25 then there shall enter by the gates of this city kings who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall be inhabited for ever. 26 And people shall come from the cities of Judah and the places round about Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the Shephelah, from the hill country, and from the Negeb, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, cereal offerings and frankincense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the LORD. 27 But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.

  21. Psalm 92:1 <A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.> It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to thy name, O Most High;

  22. Matthew 12:8 For the Son of man is lord of the Sabbath."How can this be?Because among a number of things, He is the Creator of heaven and earth.

  23. Paul felt it necessary to keep the church in remembrance of Who the Creator is. (not was but is)Colossians 1:15 He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; 16 for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities -- all things were created through him and for him.

  24. Sunday as Sabbath DayIn the books of the New TestamentThe time of the Sabbath has the same (7th day of the week) meaning aspreviously. The first (1st) day of the week has only one biblical basis; the Feast of First Fruits (Lev 23:9-14), which coincides with the resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:23).

  25. The formation of the Christian Sabbath being the first (1st) day of the week ispost (after) biblical. As the core New Testament proclamation centered on the resurrection of Jesus, and the consciousness that Jesus is also the Creator were joined in the presence of distinct anti-Jewish sentiment in early church history; it is not un-natural that a different calendar day should be assigned for the Christian Sabbath.

  26. My Lament for the ChurchesThe truly sad contemporary thing is the biblical content for remembrance seems essentially lost. No remembrance of Exodus 31 content, or the resurrection-First Fruits connection. Instead a celebration of non-work emptiness to be filled with non productive activity. Our Sunday is the ‘off-day’ rather than the ‘on-day’ of biblical remembrance.

  27. Encouragement to attend Sunday School, 9:30 AM weekly. And Keep the Sabbath holy, it is the Feast of Remembrance for Creation and First Fruits.
