Our district has 48,828 students, 53% minority, 1 in 3 from low-income families. We provide special ed. services, with 91 languages spoken. Offering multicultural education activities, Newcomers' Center for English language instruction, parent classes, and resources to welcome and involve parents. Communication includes translated documents, interpreter services, and language liaisons.

Making students feel welcome • Multicultural Education activities • Involve parents and community resources • The more comfortable and welcome students feel, the more likely parents will be involved
Newcomers’ Center • Intensive English language instruction • School “survival” skills, plus basic concepts in language arts, social studies, science, math, and health education
ELL Parent Classes • Familiarize parents with ASD schools, the Anchorage community and the United States. • Teach conversational English, reading and writing and help prepare parents for citizenship tests.
Reaching parents • Translated documents & forms • School messenger: translated robocalls • Interpreter box: Three-way calls or calls on behalf of teacher • Language & cultural liaisons • Parent group meetings
