  1. Does Your Sunscreen Contain ‘Debated’ Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles? Many sunscreens these days contain zinc oxide nanoparticles which have been rumoured to cause DNA toxicity. The debate has heated up quite a bit, and so many rumours are floating on the internet. So, Let us look into the nature and functions of zinc oxide, along with its impact on the human skin. Primary and Popular Uses of Zinc Oxide ●It is used in industrial settings as a rubber compounding material as well as in glass materials and ceramic products. ●It is used as a catalyst in alkylation, oxidation and desulphurisation reactions. ●It helps in inhibiting corrosion and also as a control agent of mildew. ●Being one of the important trace elements, it is also added to fertilizers, human vitamin supplement and animal feeds. ●It absorbs ultraviolet light and therefore, is used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. 2. Why are Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles used in sunscreens? Zinc oxide is widely used in cosmetic products for bulking, absorber of UV and for the protection of skin. But the principal concern is based on risk assessment of zinc oxide nanoparticles that are coated with other compounds and used as an ingredient in varied sunscreen formulations. According to research conducted in the year 2003, the use of ZnO in its nano-form is considered safe because, the penetration of ZnO nanoparticles proven was almost neglegible. Mammals have homeostatic mechanisms that help in regulating the concentration of zinc in the body and the application of sunscreens containing zinc oxide nanoparticles will not disturb the zinc balance of the body. According to resources, the zinc absorbed is in ionic form and the entire evidence suggests that very little portions of zinc ions that are released from ZnO nanoparticles are available for systemic exposure when they are applied dermally. What Are the Effects of Using Sunscreens Containing Zinc Oxide nanoparticles? Oral exposure: The oral exposure of zinc oxide nanoparticles when it is used as a cosmetic ingredient in the sunscreens, it possesses a small risk. 3. Inhalation exposure: If by any chance the Zinc nanoparticles are inhaled, it can cause some serious local effects in the lungs because of the direct exposure to metal particles. Conclusion: Thus, we can say that the sunscreen formulations containing zinc oxide nanoparticles do not cause any health hazards provided, they are applied dermally. It is true that the evidence presented does not have any relation to the potential genotoxicity of ZnO, so the use of nano ZnO in sunscreens does not pose any risk to customers if there is no significant systematic exposure.
