  1. Bambang Nurcahyo PrastowoCenter for Information and Communication Technology Services Universitas Gadjah Mada The technology The application The future Pervasive Computing Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id

  2. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id What is Pervasive Computing? • Taken from wikipedia's definition of ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction in which information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities • Someone "using" ubiquitous computing engages many computational devices and systems simultaneously, in the course of ordinary activities, and may not necessarily even be aware that they are doing so.

  3. The Feel • From Desktop • From Desktop • to handheld Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id

  4. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id What to do with the bank? • The business • Pervasive computing makes money • Traditional computing costs money • The technology • focused/embedded • mobile and true personal • Security • general purpose computers open more holes • hard to control PC applications

  5. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id When? • Right now, all of us are holding computers doing complex computations: • encode/decode SMS • multimedia (music/movie) processing • event calendar • etc.. • SMS-based transactions are there • More applications are coming

  6. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id What is the problem? • In Indonesia there no act on electronic transactions, not yet • Too many players competing for emposing their own's standars • How many credit/debit cards are there in your wallet? Game area electronic money? WIFI access cards? Mobile phone cards? • The right terminology should be ”not that pervasive” computing

  7. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id What is the problem? (cont.)‏ • Too many data network players. User should not be bothered with complex setup which depends on the network used

  8. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id How about privacy? • What is privacy anyway? • Pervasive computing works on mutual trust between users and providers • Users send sensitive data via Yahoo or Google mail already • They are working on deploying office system; people will store their office files on the net. • Most of us are willing to give up privacy for convenience

  9. Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id The Future • From IBM/Cisco white paper: Pervasive Computing enables access to new services through hand-held devices such as PDAs or cell phones. • Wireless devices are growing in importance due to the increased mobility of both employees and customers. • Pervasive Computing supports personalized services such as e-mail, calendaring, contact lists, notes, and other applications such as customer relationship management, sales-force automation, supply-chain management, order management, contact management or field service. • Pervasive Computing services that are timely and relevant to customers can be used to increase customer satisfaction.

  10. Thank you. Closing Mark Mail: pratowo@ugm.ac.idWeb: http://prastowo.staff.ugm.ac.id
