  2. Monroe Doctrine • President Monroe – Isolationism • What did the Monroe Doctrine say? • It said that the U.S. would stay out of the affairs of European countries and Russia. • BUT • They (Europe & Russia) must also stay out of the affairs of North and South America (western hemisphere)

  3. Spanish – American War • The U.S. gained land with the defeat of Spain and became a first-class power in world politics • Land Acquired • Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, Hawaii

  4. Good Neighbor Policy • Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine • Allowed the U.S. to police Latin America • Revolutions etc. • Is the Monroe Doctrine a vital part of U.S. foreign policy today?

  5. Open Door Policy with China • Secretary of State John Hay • Promoted equal trade access for all nations with China

  6. WWI • German submarine warfare against the American shipping in the Atlantic Ocean made us get out of our isolationist stance • In 1917 we entered WWI “to make the world safe for democracy.”

  7. WWII • Ended America’s commitment to isolationism • WHY? • It involved 61 nations around the world • WWII was the shift in U.S. foreign policy to internationalism – we have used this ever since. • Protection of the U.S.

  8. Deterrence • Keeping your military might at such a high level that it would discourage, prevent an attack

  9. Cold War • 40 years of tense, hostile relations between the two superpowers (U.S. & U.S.S.R.) • A time of threats, posturing and military buildup – NO actual fighting

  10. Truman Doctrine • What was it? • Economic and military aid to those countries that were coming under the control of communism • SEE EXAMPLES IN NEXT SLIDES

  14. Vietnam War • Communist supported North Vietnam attacks against anticommunist South Vietnam • Soviets and China supplied equipment etc to North Vietnam

  15. Dangers Today • Iraq • North Korea • Terrorist Groups – al Qaida
