  2. History • Chlorine was discovered by Carl William Scheele, a Swedish chemist, in 1774. He mixed manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid and discovered this greenish, yellow gas. However he did not establish chlorine as a element. In 1810, chlorine was named and Humphrey Davy classified that it was an element. It was named chloros, which means pale green in Greek.

What are the uses Chlorine? • Chlorine is used for disinfecting water. • It is used in the production of textiles, paper productions, dyes, petroleum products, medicines, insecticides, foods, solvents, plastics, paints and many other products. • It is also used to produce light in the Philippines. • It was used as a poisonous gas is some wars.

  5. Problems with the use of Chlorine? • It is poisonous in large amounts and can be hazardous. • When it is inhaled, it irritates the lungs, eyes and skin badly. • It can cause fire with some things because it is really sensitive.

Advantages of Chlorine • Chlorine is essential to safe water. • Chlorine is 1 of the most effective and low-cost germ killers against infections, viruses and bacteria. • Chlorine is used to make many modern medicine and medical equipment. • Chlorine helps improve human health because 96% of all crops protection chemicals use chlorine and this also helps increase in production. • The products of chlorine chemistry such as bullet-resistant vests, bullet-resistant glass, fire resistant attire, seat belts and air-bags, not only save lives but also make that world a much safer place. • Chlorine helps make our everyday lives a lot more better because approximately every part of the house is touched by chlorines benefits.

Disadvantages of Chlorine • Chlorine (gas) is difficult to handle since it is dangerous, heavy and acidic. • Chlorine can form trihalomethanes which can cause cancer. • When chlorine enters the body by breathing, swallowing or skin contact, it reacts with water to produce acids which damage skin cells. • Chlorine atoms in the air eat up the ozone which protects life on earth. • Chlorine in our bath water is a dangerous enemy that dries and damages skin and hair. • Chlorine gas is poisonous and can lead to deadly illness.

  8. Is the use of chlorine good or bad? Chlorine is a basic element of life. We should focus on what we do with it and how we use it to improve society. It is how we shape it and use it that determines that advantages and disadvantages of chlorine.

Facts • Chlorine is a highly reactive gas. • More then a few breaths of chlorine, about 1000ppm, will typically kill you. • Studies have linked chlorine for cancer, high blood pressure, anemia, heart disease and strokes. • Chlorine is a member of the halogen group and combines with nearly all the other elements.
