CHIC DNA Repository • MISSION • The CHIC DNA Repository, co-sponsored by the OFA and the AKC CHF, collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding Genealogic and Phenotypic information to facilitate future research
CHIC DNA Repository • OBJECTIVES • Facilitate more rapid research progress by expediting the sample collection process • Provide researchers with optimized family groups needed for research • Allow breeders to take advantage of future DNA based disease tests as they become available • Foster a team environment between breeders and the research community improving the likelihood of genetic discovery
CHIC DNA Repository • AKC Delegates Meeting, Sept ’05 • Dr. Elaine Ostrander, AKC DNA Consultant, answers questions from the floor…”Besides money, what is the most important thing we can do to assist research efforts…” • Response: “PROVIDE SAMPLES”
CHIC DNA Repository • Need for Education re: DNA • AKC DNA Program • Imports • Field Inspections • Multiple Sired Litters • Frequently Used Sire • Parentage Verification / Stud Book Integrity • Versus DNA for Health Research Purposes
CHIC DNA Repository • Blood versus Swab Solution • Blood • Higher Yield • Better Quality • Works with all scientific applications • Invasive • High Cost • Limited Participation • Swabs • Low Cost • Non Invasive • Greater Participation • Decreased Yield • New Technology requires less quantity
CHIC DNA Repository • Dual Solution…Blood or Swab • Blood • University of Missouri, Dr. Gary Johnson’s Lab • Swabs • University of California – Davis, Veterinary Genetics Lab, contacts: Dr. Mark Neff & Dr. Alison Ruhe
CHIC DNA Repository • Pilot Program • 6 Months • Golden Retriever Club of America • Sample, Genealogy, Health History collected on nearly 1,000 dogs • Mix of healthy / affected dogs • Heart Murmurs, Hemangiosarcoma, Fibrosarcoma, Mast Cell Tumors, Hypothyroid, Cataracts, Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
CHIC DNA Repository • 24 Months Later • 3000+ dogs • 60 breeds • 2 approved application for samples • MBT – Lens Luxation • GR – Mast Cell Tumor • 4 clubs have facilitated transfer of samples from existing banks to CHIC (Miniature Bull Terriers, Otterhounds, Field Spaniels, Poodles) • National Specialty DNA Clinics
