A large flat plain, and several rivers (The Seine and the Loire) • Economy • Depends on agriculture and manufacturing • Service industries, and Tourism • Strong National Loyalty • Everyone speaks French and about 90% of the population is Roman Catholic • Government • Republic • Strong national government with elected leaders, including a powerful president • Population • 3/4ths of the population live in large cities. • Paris, the capital, is the countries largest city. It is the home to many universities, museums, and cultural sites
The Benelux Countries The word Benelux comes from a combination of letters from the countries of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg All three countries are densely populated, have high standards of living, and are parliamentary democracies with constitutional monarchies
Belgium • Belgium has long been a trade and manufacturing center. • It has two main cultural and language groups • Flemings – located in the North and speak Flemish, a form of language based on Dutch. • Walloons – located in the South, and speak French. • Tension often arises between these two groups.
The Netherlands • Netherlands means lowlands. More than half the country is below sea level. It is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. • Also known as the Dutch. • Physical Landscape • They use a system of dikes and pumps to create polders – drained land with rich farming soil. • The Delta Plan Project is a huge system of barriers that keeps the North Sea from overflowing the countryside during storms. • Economy • Ranks 3rd in the world in the value of its agricultural exports. • Most of the population is employed through service industries, manufacturing companies, and trade networks. • Population • About 90% of the population lives in cities. Amsterdam is the capital and largest city.
Luxembourg • Europe’s smallest country • It is a very prosperous country • Multinational companies – firms that do business in several countries • Most of its population is multilingual – able to speak several languages
