  1. Making Autodesk® Navisworks® Work for You: Presenter, Timeliner, and Clash Detective Zach Crumal BIM Engineer, Saunders Construction Inc.

  2. Zach Crumal – Saunders Construction Inc. • Kristina Bollin – Lab Assistant • CR104-1L - The most efficient tips and tricks to increase productivity in Autodesk ® Navisworks ® inside the modules of Presenter, Timeliner, and Clash Detective.

  3. Our Goal: Increase familiarity and productivity when working in Navisworks ®, and avoid some confusing areas. Taking notes as we go through the lab will be extremely helpful as we may go onto some topics not discussed in the handout. We will primarily work in Navisworks in this Lab, and refer to the handout occasionally. • Please ask any questions towards the end of the lab during Q & A so we are able to go through as many topics as we can.

  4. Key Learning • Custom selection sets – Allows for greater control and flexibility when working with the model in all modules • Productive workflow standards – Speed up the time it takes to set up model the way you need it both before and after in Navisworks ® • Producing the final product (images, animations) – Exporting what you need faster and with appropriate quality • Object overrides – Have the model look and feel how you want use it • Identifying and troubleshooting problem areas – Avoid some common Issues and Headaches

  5. Custom selection sets • Allows for greater control and flexibility when working with the model in all modules • Used to isolate and combine building elements as well as transform (x, y, z), change colors and transparencies, isolate/hide and add comments. • Appended files will be displayed with their respective filename (Arch.nwc, MEP.nwc, interior walls.nwc etc.) and sepererated independent file set

  6. Export / Import Searches • You can also export search sets and reuse them. • For example, if models contain the same components you can export them as an XML file, and share with others

  7. The object overrides of transformation (x,y,z), color and transparency is a right click after selecting an item or set and going to Override Item (You also can reset the item to its original state). • The selection sets are identified by blue icon, and the search sets are identified by binoculars with blue icon

  8. How these sets interact with the modules: • Timeliner: Right click on an individual task and select ‘Attack Selection Set/Search’. You can update and delete selections at any time. • Presenter: Select the item(s) then right click on the desired material and ‘Apply to selected Items’. You can remove and edit these materials at any time. • Clash Detective: Allows the user to choose desired selections sets/layers/files to be analyzed and run interference checks. You are able to run clashes on like items, as well as combinations of sets.

  9. Productive workflow standards • Speed up the time it takes to set up model the way you need it both before in Revit ®and after in Navisworks ® • Tools-Global Options-Interface-Selection • Add Comments Before and After Navisworks ® • This allows you to adjust your selectivity based on objects/layers/geometry • Tools-Global Options-Interface-Display units -switch from Meters to Feet & Inches etc

  10. Productive workflow standards • ‘Unselect Hidden’ isolates items from the rest, and ‘ Hidden’ hides the selected items. • By creating selection sets and hiding them as you go, you are able to ensure no pieces are left out or labeled incorrectly.

  11. Producing the final product (images, animations) • Exporting what you need faster and with appropriate quality output • You can specify what location on your computer the file will save to as well as format (JPEG etc) & image size the file output will be (aspect ratio, use view)

  12. Producing the final product (images, animations) • Animations can take a long time to export based on your computing power • PNG File Approach • You can specify what location on your computer the file will save to as well as format (JPEG etc) & image size the file output will be (aspect ratio, use view) • AVI files are very large in file size and take a long time export

  14. Trouble-Shooting • (Item-Type-Contains-Line) • Hot fix patch from autodesk.com that resolves issue with openings (e.g. windows and doors) being displayed as solid objects • Is Presenter Holding You Back? -Tools-Global Options-Tools-Presenter-Profile=Advanced

  15. Trouble-Shooting 1. When exporting from Revit to AutoCAD file. Make sure you are in a 3D view before exporting. -File - Export - CAD Formats - Select Options button next to "Files of type" -Select "Export as ACIS solids" under the "Solids (3D views only) - Select OK then Save 2. Since the exported dwg file is very large, open the dwg file in Navisworks and save it as a .nwd file. -This drastically reduced the number of clashes.
