  1. Think-Pair-Share • What do you think the terms “standard of living” and “quality of life” mean?

  2. Was Farming a Good Idea? • Read the following passage • Take a piece of notebook paper and fold it in half vertically. • On one side write “Hunter-Gatherer Way of Life” and on the other side write “Settled Farming”. • Then fold the paper in half vertically. • On the top half right advantages, on the bottom write disadvantages. • Write as many advantages and disadvantages for each way of life you can think of from the reading or any others that come to mind.

  3. Was Farming a Good Idea? • There will be four groups, one each for advantages and disadvantages of hunter-gatherers and farming ways of life. • In your group, compare your list for your category and then prepare a final list for your group. • Each group will present their list to the class!

  4. Would You Rather? Based on what you have learned so far about farming societies and foraging societies- determine which you would rather live in and explain why!

  6. Goal • Your goal is to show that you have understood the shift from foraging societies to agricultural societies through an assessment of which you believe is more preferable and why.

  7. Role • You are a journalist for National Geographic.

  8. Audience • Your target audience is the 31 million US readers who are curious, passionate influencers, actively engaged in making a difference in their lives.

  9. Situation • The situation you find yourself in is that your editor just gave you the next writing assignment for the December Edition of National Geographic. The editor warns you that you must remember that while your readers are well educated, they may not have any background knowledge so you will need to be very descriptive. Your editor would also like you to reference at least two outside sources.

  10. Product • You will create an editorial which makes a valid,well-supported argument in favor OR against reverting to the foraging lifestyle. This editorial mustinclude a brief description of what a foraging society is and an agricultural society is. You will then encourage readers to either revert back to the foraging lifestyle with an explanation of why you think it would be better for humanity OR warn readers against reverting back to the foraging lifestyle with an explanation as to why our current way of life is better. In this editorial you must address the three main relationships (humans and the environment, humans and other humans, and humans and their ideas, beliefs and views of the world) through a comparison of the relationships in foraging societies versus agricultural societies.
