  1. PARENT MEETING

  2. Dear Parents, I would personally like to thank you for your participation and support of the Venice High Athletic Department. Our main goal is to provide an atmosphere where your son or daughter can have fun, learn the valuable lessons interscholastic athletics can teach and help them achieve their academic and athletic potential. Parents play a critical role in this process. It is important that we all work together to contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere in which your athletes learn, compete, and grow as individuals within a team environment. Within interscholastic athletics, success is defined as not only seeing your son or daughter develop their athletic skills but also to develop in areas of self-esteem, self-discipline, leadership, citizenship, perseverance, goal setting, etc., to mention just a few of the many lessons learned through competitive athletics. While winning is the objective for each and every game; and winning a championship is always a worthy goal to begin each season, please keep in mind that these goals are secondary, and not the primary goals of interscholastic athletics. It is also important to keep in mind that college scholarships , while also desirable goals , are reserved for less than 1 percent of all high school athletes. The goal is to get ready for life for when the athletic career ends, which it does for everyone at some point. I hope you take the time to review the presentation, the video clips and the recommended resources provided . I believe it will be extremely useful to you as you guide your son and daughter through this exciting and unique phase in their lives. Remember, no influence or single factor determines the future success of your child more than you. I encourage you to educate yourself on how to be the best coach to your athlete as you can. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in any way. Thanks again for your support, Rich McKeonAthletic Director

  3. VENICE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the athletic program is to develop the student-athlete academically, physically, emotionally and socially by pursuing excellence within a values-based athletic program dedicated to the ideals of Pursuing Victory with Honor.

  4. VENICE ATHLETICS VISION STATEMENT To pursue academic and athletic excellence by offering the highest quality sports programs, facilities, and coaches through a commitment to a values-based philosophy of sport which emphasizes the ideals achieved through the adherence of the principals of PursuingVictory with Honor.

  5. WE BELIEVE….. Students are our highest priority The dignity, worth and self-esteem of participants should be paramount in all athletic activities The most important result of competition is the development of life-long values and skills The athletic program is an integral part of the high school experience High school athletics should be fun and rewarding Athletic programs are most beneficial when they are competitive Winning is an attitude resulting from optimum preparations, concentrated effort, and a deep commitment to excel Well-designed athletic programs promote community and school pride Open communication and mutual respect among coaches, parents, and athletes provide the foundation of a successful athletic program Morale, satisfaction, and performance are enhanced when athletes work together as a team Well qualified coaches and program administrators are important components in a successful athletic program Positive parent support and involvement enhance student growth and program quality

  6. PARENT EXPECTATIONS It is very difficult to accept when your child is not playing as much as you may hope. Coaches are teachers. They make judgment decisions based on what they believe to be best for all students involved. As you have seen from the list on the previous page, certain things can and should be discussed with the coach. Other things, such as the ones listed below, must be left to the professional judgment of the coach.

  7. Communication that parents, guardians, and student/athletes should expect from your coach: • Philosophy of the coach • Expectations the coach has for your student/athlete and the team • Location and times of all practices and games • Team requirements, special equipment, out of season expectations • Procedures to follow should the student/athlete be injured during participation

  8. PARENT CONCERNS

  9. STEP ONE If there is a problem, have your son/daughter talk to the coach, one-on-one. It’s a part of growing up.

  10. If this does not resolve the problem, parents should: • Call the school and request a returned call or a face-to-face meeting with the coach. • Coaches will make time available in their day to meet with students and parents

  11. PARENTING THE STUDENT ATHLETE VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZXfxxTLyUE PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. PARENTS MUST NOT: 1. Confront the coach before/after practice 2. Confront the coach before/after a game Coaches are teachers. A parent would not walk into a classroom during class time and yell at the teacher about a poor grade, so please do not confront the coach in a public setting. There are proper ways to communicate and have your concerns addressed. Practices and games are highly emotional times for everyone involved; players, coaches, and parents. Meetings and concerns do not get resolved during these emotional times.

  13. APPROPRIATE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH A COACH: • Treatment of your student/athlete, mentally or physically • Ways to help your student/athlete to improve • Concerns that involve your student/athlete only

  14. ISSUES NOT APROPRIATE TO DISCUSS WITH THE COACH: • Playing Time • Team strategy • Play calling • Other student-athletes

  15. What to do if the meeting with the coach did not provide satisfactory resolution: Call the school Athletic Director. The Athletic Director will attempt to mediate a resolution.

  41. Jack Renkens…. “A parent’s coaching job is the toughest one of all and takes a lot of effort. Sometimes, in an effort to help your child, your best intentions can end up being counter productive. Applying the Rules for Parents will go a long way to fostering an environment your child can use to enjoy and excel in their sport.”
