LARGEMOUTH BASS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE ECONOMY. MANY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE SPENT EACH YEAR ON FISHING TACKLE IN PURSUIT OF THIS FISH, ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR GAMEFISH IN NORTH AMERICA. HOW DO WE PROTECT THEM? SET LAWS THAT LIMIT THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF BASS THAT CAN BE TAKEN. ALSO AVOIDING TAKING ANY DURING THE SPAWNING SEASON (SPRING) INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF THE NEXT GENERATION BEING SUCCESSFUL. WHAT IS THEIR HABITAT? LARGEMOUTH BASS LIVE MOSTLY IN PONDS AND SHALLOW AREAS OF LAKES, THOUGH THEY CAN OCCASIONALLY BE FOUND IN RIVERS. THEY TYPICALLY ARE FOUND AROUND SUBMERGED VEGETATION WHERE THEY CAN AMBUSH THEIR PREY. ONE COOL THING… IS THAT LARGEMOUTH BASS HAVE A SENSORY ORGAN ON THE SIDE OF THEIR BODY CALLED A LATERAL LINE WHICH DETECTS CHANGES IN WATER PRESSURE AROUND THEM. THIS ALERTS THEM TO PREDATORS AND PREY IN THE AREA.
