Sonnets. Their history and their authors. Two Main Types of Poetry. Lyric Poetry : musical verse that expresses the observation and feelings of a single speaker. Ex: sonnet , haiku, tanka Narrative Poetry : tells a story; usually has characters, plot, setting, and theme.

  2. Two Main Types of Poetry • Lyric Poetry: musical verse that expresses the observation and feelings of a single speaker. • Ex: sonnet, haiku, tanka • Narrative Poetry: tells a story; usually has characters, plot, setting, and theme. • Ex: ballad, epic

  3. Definition Sonnet: a fourteen-line lyric poem with a single theme. Usually written in iambic pentameter. scansion: the process of analyzing the metrical patter of a poem meter : recurring pattern of stressed (accented, or long) and unstressed (unaccented, or short) syllables in lines of a set length. Meter is determined by the type of foot and the number of feet in a line.

  5. Iambic Pentameter A foot containing an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable (as above) is called an iamb. Because there are five feet in the line, all iambic, the meter of the line is iambic pentameter. Shakespearean Sonnets • First Quatrain • An exposition of the main theme and main metaphor • Second Quatrain • Theme and metaphor are extended or complicated; often, some imaginative example is given • Third Quatrain • Peripeteia (a twist or conflict), often introduced by a “but” (often found in the volta) • Couplet • Summarizes and leaves the reader with anew, concluding image

An Echo from Willow-Wood Two gazed into a pool, he gazed and she, Not hand in hand, yet heart in heart, I think, Pale and reluctant on the water’s brink As on the brink of parting which must be, Each eyed the other’s aspect, she and he, Each felt one hungering heart leap up and sink, Each tasted bitterness which both must drink There on the brink of life’s dividing sea. Lilies upon the surface, deep below Two wistful faces craving each for each, Resolute and reluctant without speech:--- A sudden ripple made the faces flow, One moment joined, to vanish out of reach: So those hearts joined, and ah were parted so.

  10. Astrophil and Stella • One of the earliest, and best, sonnet cycles written in English is Astrophil and Stella by Sir Philip Sidney. Sidney was an Elizabethan courtier who served the queen well though he fell out of and back into favor more than once. Astrophil and Stella, like most sonnets of the time, was written in the tradition of “courtly love.” (See the separate handout on courtly love.) Below are three sonnets from Astrophil and Stella. Stella is the beloved of the poems, and Astrophil, the lover, is the speaker.

LII A strife is grown between Virtue and Love,While each pretends that Stella must be his:Her eyes, her lips, her all, saith Love, do this,Since they do wear his badge, most firmly prove.But Virtue thus that title doth disprove,That Stella (O dear name!) that Stella isThat virtuous soul, sure heir of heav'nly bliss.Not this faire outside, which our heart doth moue.And therefore, though her beauty and her graceBe Loves indeed, in Stella’s self he mayBy no pretence claim any manner place.Well, Love, since this demure our suit doth stay,Let Virtue have that Stella’s self, yet thus,That Virtue but that body grant to vs.
