The Epic Hero and His Archetypal Character Traits The Protagonist He goes on a long adventure (epic). On his journey, he faces many challenges to overcome and is usually trying to accomplish a specific goal before he returns home. Many times, there are individuals depending on him to be successful. He represents the culture and people of where he is from. He can be capable of super-human feats. He usually experiences some form of the supernatural on his journey. He is usually seen fighting against some form of evil. He might be accompanied and supported by others on his journey or he can go alone.
The Villain/Evil Figure He is usually the antagonist. His goal is to do harm against others. He opposes what is good and right. Seeks his own selfish motives (usually possessions and/or power). He challenges and may even fight against the hero. Targets the hero who is trying to stop his evil deeds.
Mentor/Teacher Has obtained much wisdom. Aids/assists the hero by giving him valuable advice or teaching him important lessons to prepare him for the challenges of his journey. Is usually older (at least older than the one he is advising). Can be a source of encouragement for the hero and also sympathetic to his struggles.
The Damsel in Distress A young woman who is very pretty, or attractive. She is incapable of saving herself—needs the help and strength of the hero. Can be fragile or weak, but not always. Finds herself in dangerous situations she is not strong enough to handle on her own.
The Monster Inhuman or unnatural being or beast. Can be good or evil. Ignites fear when seen. If evil, he causes disaster. If evil, the hero will be challenged to fight the monster. May or may not be able to reason. Has superhuman qualities.
