Context clues Context clues help us determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Contrast • A contrast between an unknown word and the rest of the sentence is a type of context clue. The clue is often indicated by the use of these words: • but • not • on the other hand
Seventh Grade by: Gary Soto French was an elective, but math and English had to be on Victor’s schedule. What does the word, elective, mean?
