  2. Context clues Context clues help us determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

  3. Contrast • A contrast between an unknown word and the rest of the sentence is a type of context clue. The clue is often indicated by the use of these words: • but • not • on the other hand

  4. Seventh Grade by: Gary Soto French was an elective, but math and English had to be on Victor’s schedule. What does the word, elective, mean?

  5. Seventh Grade by: Gary Soto • The man was portly, not slender. • He scowled with ferocity, but his nature was gentle. • Most student dashed from the room, but Theresa lingered. • Victor thought, “I could try to bluff, on the other hand, I could stop pretending and be truthful.”

  7. Seventh Grade by: Gary Soto 1. Compose a sentence for each of the vocabulary words, using the contrast clue words (but, not, on the other hand). 2. Underline each vocabulary word, as well as the contrast clue word in each sentence. 3. Do not use the definition of the vocabulary word in your sentences!
