2. “IP Management @ Universities”Istanbul, May 16 to 18, 2012 Albert Long Hall, BOGAZICI UNIVERSITY • Main facts • The Road Map project is part of a Europe-wide project that aims to raise IP awareness and to improve IP education in Europe • Origin: March 2006 workshop entitled “How to integrate patent-related IP teaching in universities” attended by representatives of the EPO Academy, NPOs, universities and TTOs • 14 Roving workshops organised covering 19 member states of the European Patent Organisation • Based on the discussions held at these workshops, a “road map”, plan for universities was established incl. a presentation of the situation in the field of IP teaching in universities, identification of needs resulting in specific activities with timetable • Start of implementation of the majority of Road Maps in 2009 • There are currently 14 road maps covering 16 member states EPO Academy – Implementation of Road Maps to Giovanna Oddo disseminate IP knowledge in universities in Europe

3. “IP Management @ Universities”Istanbul, May 16 to 18, 2012 Albert Long Hall, BOGAZICI UNIVERSITY • Problems encountered • Slow implementation of Road Maps due to the economic crisis resulting in severe budget cuts and a lack of leadership (1st Progress Conference in 2010) • Solution • EPO appoints in coordination with respective NPOs 13 « Road Map Coordinators » (RMCs) in the first quarter of 2011 for a period of 18 months • Result • Road Map Steering Committees are set up in all countries • All Road Maps were revised in autumn 2011 • Annual Progress Conference in October 2011 showed clear progress in the implementation of Road Maps EPO Academy – Implementation of Road Maps to Giovanna Oddo disseminate IP knowledge in universities in Europe

4. “IP Management @ Universities”Istanbul, May 16 to 18, 2012 Albert Long Hall, BOGAZICI UNIVERSITY • Examples of progress achieved (which can be linked directly or indirectly to the Road map project) • Integration of IP in curricula of university faculties - set up of bachelor, master courses, specialisation courses, some compulsory e.g. example of Italy • On-line platform on IP teaching e.g. Belgium • Enhanced awareness on IP through workshops on specific IP issues e.g. Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Turkey etc • Compilation & publication on IP e.g. llst of IP teaching materials • Creation of national IP working groups e.g. Latvia • Creation of IP instructor network, IP teaching coordinators, IP teacher’s network, of IP « Chairs » e.g. Latvia, Spain • Translation of PTK into national language e.g. Turkey, Latvia, and training of teachers • Patent Appointment System (Turkey) • Elaboration of a « Code of Good Practice concerning IP knowledge in universities » (Rumania) EPO Academy – Implementation of Road Maps to Giovanna Oddo disseminate IP knowledge in universities in Europe
