Aims of the WLA • To lobby for the interests of the sub-region • To develop collaborative strategies and initiatives - socio-economic issues • To improve provision of public services in West London - sharing knowledge, expertise and resources, undertaking joint ventures, and securing additional resources

  4. West London • 1.4 million population • More than 700,000 jobs • Economy of £34.2bn Gross Added Value • Heathrow is UK’s international hub airport • London’s largest industrial location – Park Royal • Areas of acute deprivation and disadvantage

Employment Projections to 2031 • Currently 700,000 employees in West London • Population projected to grow by 113,000 • Employment to grow by 99,000 jobs • Highest growth rate in Hammersmith & Fulham • Lowest growth in Hounslow (3%) and Hillingdon (7%) • West London growth overall 12% • London generally 17% growth

Businesses • 70,000 workplaces in West London • 88% of workplaces employ 10 or less people • 9% employ between 11 and 49 people • 55,000 registered businesses • Business density of 38.4 Vat registered businesses per 1000 residents higher than UK and London except central region • Largest employers are in Hounslow and Hillingdon • 17% are employed in the public sector

Banking, Finance and Insurance • Largest sector in West London 24% • Comparatively low when compared with London-wide 35% • Competition from overseas locations for back office type functions carried out in WL • 1,020 businesses - Key locations H&F and Harrow • Over past 10 years employment relatively steady at c.168,000

  9. Transport and Communications • 16% of Employment in West London • Double London Average • Heathrow workforce 73,436 • Less than half of Heathrow workers from West London

  10. Logistics • 18% of employment (129,000 jobs) • Includes transport and warehousing/ distribution • Expected increase of between 12 & 15% in employment between 2006 and 2026 • Key locations – Heathrow and Park Royal

  11. Retailing • Potential significant growth with estimated 300,000sqm+ increase in retail floorspace through to 2021in West London • 5 Metropolitan, 6 Major Town & 25 District Centres • Heathrow & White City • Provides ‘entry’ level employment

  12. Creative Industries • Supports between 58,000 & 93,000 jobs depending on definition (up to13% of employment) • BBC in H&F and BSkyB in Hounslow are key locations – 2/3rd of creative jobs • Very strong growth between 1998-2008 but 8,000 BBC jobs could go to Manchester

  13. Health and Social Care • Growing presence in West London 9% of employment – 60,000 employees • Growth in NHS & Primary Care Trusts • Pharmaceutical and Bio-chemical presence – GSK HQ in Hounslow

  14. High Technology Services • 6.5% of employment – 46,000 jobs • 1.4%pa growth • IT firms include Cisco, Adobe and Apple • Key locations Stockley Park, Hatton Cross, Chiswick Park and Hammersmith

  15. Tourism and Leisure • LDA LATI model estimates 48,000 employed in tourism in West London compared with 255,000 across London • Experienced 20% growth between 1998-2005 • Key locations inc Wembley, Earls Court, Olympia and Heathrow

  16. Food and Drink • 13,000 employed in food & drink manufacturing more than half of London wide sector employment • Unlike elsewhere in London has been expanding in West London • 8,000 jobs in Food wholesale activities • Park Royal key location with Food Innovation Centre

  17. Future employment areas • Heathrow. Broad skills requirements - logistics, construction, transport and aviation functions as well as softer skills relating to customer service and hospitality. • New Development. Crossrail and major sites at Wembley, Uxbridge, Brent Cross, Southall and later White City and Earls Court, will need construction skills.  • New Industries? Carbon management, resource efficiency, land management and Green IT, as well as risk management, sustainable procurement, environmental management, design and waste handling.
