The rules of the classroom: Rules are outlined in the syllabus provided to students in the beginning of the school year: Each student will respect the rights of his/her classmate Each student must raise his/her hand and wait quietly to be called on Three tardy class appearances will result in a detention Each month, students will be given ten passes ONLY for lavatory/locker use Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class Students must dress in accordance with the Northern dress code provided to them in the student manual 12 points are deducted each day for late assignments (projects, papers) Late homework will not be accepted, unless student is absent from school The obvious- no eating, gum chewing, desk writing, phone using, sleeping, profanity

  15. Students always know what to expect when they enter the classroom. A Power Point slide will be projected onto the front screen, complete with the following information: • The date • The Do Now • A class agenda • Student objectives for the lesson This will typically be set up using the following format:

The Classroom Room 107, West Building Typically, the desks are moved into a circle for almost all classes (especially those that are discussion based) The students prefer the circle, or “horseshoe,” to these horrifying rows Each classroom is equipped with a ceiling projector, white screen, and all sorts of different maps.

  18. The Classroom Room 107, West Building The desk on the left hand side of the photo has two bins: One holds lesson plans and corresponding assignments in the event students have missed a day of school. The other holds late, or make-up, assignments.

  19. The Classroom • This is the front of the room, the area by the front (teacher’s) desk. • Each classroom has a telephone, and a directory of emergency numbers, room telephone contact numbers, and faculty extensions beside it.

  20. The Classroom • Teacher Desk • There is a mini library of books and resources behind the desk. • Also, the desk is surrounded by filing cabinets and organizers. (The history department at Northern have extremely sharp organizational skills) • Beside the computer is a dvd player and master volume control.

  21. The Classroom • This is the area along the back of the room. • The cabinet in the background houses extra textbooks and sample assignments from previous school years. Students know to check here for work samples or to grab a textbook if they forgot their copy. • The desk to the right of the cabinet is for extra materials.

  22. The Classroom • This desk supports dictionaries, almanacs, and a few other “quick reference” books. • There is also extra sheets of lined paper, pencil sharpener, stapler, hole punch, tape dispenser, and a pencil/pen holder that typically holds extra writing utensils.
