Input • Slavery and the Mexican-American War • The vast territory acquired as a result of the Mexican-American War reignited the controversy over slavery. • The Wilmot Proviso: In 1846, Representative David Wilmot of Pennsylvania proposed that Congress ban slavery in all territory that might become part of the U.S. as a result of the Mexican – American War. • In August 1848, antislavery Whigs and Democrats formed a new party called the Free-Soil Party.
