  1. Scholar Seminar CBPR : A Logic Model For Translating Research Findings Into Policies and Practices Presented by Eddie F. Brown DSW

  2. …SO PUBLICATION OF A PAPER IS JUST THE FIRST STEP IN A COMPLEX SET OF PROCESSES THAT ARE NEEDED TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR From Theory to Practice: Translating Research into Health Outcomes PLOS Med. 2008 January; 5(1): e15. …translational research refers to translating research into practice; i.e., ensuring that new treatments and research knowledge actually reach the patients or population for whom they are intended and are implemented correctly. The production of a new drug, an end point for “bench to bedside” translation, is only the starting point …Wolf, S.H. The meaning of translational research and why it matters.JAMA 2008; 299(2): 211-213.

  3. BACKGROUND • CBPR has important role in expanding reach of translational intervention & implementation • Canadian First Nations have begun mandating CBRP approach for research on their behalf • Universities and NCAI are collaborating to better understand how CBPR works to improve health and health equity Over last decade: Community-engaged approaches gained traction to reduce/eliminate heath disparities CBPR emerged as transformative research paradigm, bridging gap between science and practice

  4. CBPR addresses intervention challenges: • partnering with community members to contextualize an intervention for specific settings, • fosters the needed trust within partnerships to enable effective translation of research within diverse settings, and • integrating cultural values and practices to enhance and support policies and sustainability. CBPR Conceptual LOGIC MODEL

  5. CBPR is a political process and a political statement • CBPR project impact those with political powers, i.e. politicians, health industries and providers • CBPR deals with policy development and advocacy • For CBPR to succeed a constructive format • to translate scientific results and advocacy into policy at tribal, state, federal levels must be provided • Academic researcher’s engagement in advocacy and policy enhances credibility and builds trust in the community • O’Fallon. R., Frederick, L., Deary, A., eds. Successful models of community-based participatory research. National Institute of Health, Final Report. Washington D.C. March 29-31, 2000. UNDERSTANDING THE POLITICAL NATURE OF CBPR/TBPR

  6. TRANSLATING CBPR RESEARCH FINDINGS INTO POLICY AND HEALTH OUTCOMES Dissemination of CBPR results is done throughout research process and serves as a progress report to community members Development and implementation of CBPR projects need to produce results that can directly impact policy • For research findings to translate into public policy and health outcomes: • Dissemination of results in appropriate venues • Findings are presented in accessible and balanced way • Tribes, states, and federal governments must provide an environment for policy development and advocacy that enables and encourages behavior change

  8. Translational Research Phases • T1 or translational phase 1 - jump-starts the translation of bench research to the patient bedside • T2 - expands the spear of discovery to the larger patient population seen in Phase 3 and 4 clinical trials • T3 relies on dissemination and implementation research to find out the answers to such questions as: Is treatment X now actually being used in the world-at-large, and if not, why not? • Finally if T1-T3 have reached their goals and responded effectively to any new issues, new policy research is engendered in T4. • While there are those in the field who predominantly focus on the T1 and/or T2 in their definition-making, Tufts CTSI envisions effective translational science as incorporating all aspects of the T1-T4 scale. • Each of these stages brings to life important research, but it takes all four to bring what happens in a lab’s Petri dish to the nightstand of the general population.

  10. Translation Research Is Both Product Driven and Policy Focused Steven H. Woolf points out : …some researchers define it as what occurs from bench-to-bedside in the development of new drugs, devices, and treatment options for patients, while others view it as “translating research into practice.” In other words, one definition is product driven, the other community and policy focused. https://portal.tuftsctsi.org Policy Development Drugs Policy Focused Product Driven Policy Analysis Treatment Options Policy Advocacy Devices
