Rhetorical Modes: Defined • It is the organization of a piece of writing, what classical rhetoricians called “arrangement” • Whether you’re analyzing a text or writing your own, considering how the essay and its individual paragraphs or sections are arranged is important • Question: Is the text organized in the best possible way in order to achieve its purpose?
Rhetorical Modes: continued • An essay always has a beginning, middle, and end: introduction, developmental paragraphs, and conclusion. • However, how a writer structures the argument within that framework depends on his or her intended purpose and effect. Consider the classical model: On pages 13-14 in LOC
Rhetorical Modes: Basic • In fact, the classical model may not be appropriate if the writer’s purpose is to compare and contrast, to narrate an event, or to define a term. • Each of these purposes suggests a method of organization, or arrangement. • These patterns of development include a range of logical ways to organize an entire text, or more likely, individual paragraphs or sections.
