  2. Defining Cause and Effect A relationship between actions or events such that one or more are the result of the other or others.

  3. Causal Analysis Focuses on explanations that show a connection between a situation and its cause or effect. It answers either question: • Why did this happen? • What will this do?

  4. Make it Visual Cause (Past) Situation (Present) Effect (Future) ‘ S happened because of past C’s ’ ‘E will happen because present S or past C’s’

  5. Example 1 Cities have grown very large because there are factory jobs easily available , better schools for families, and places of leisure, entertainment, and culture. • Situation (present): Large Cities • Causes for this large city (started in past): • Factory jobs • Better schools • Entertainment/leisure/culture

  6. Example 2 Deforestation in South East Asia will result in landslides, soil loss and, eventually, lower food production. • Situation (present and past): Deforestation • Effect on the environment and humanity (in future): • landslides • Soil Loss • Lower food production

  7. Group Exercise Using large chart paper, map out of the following sentences for cause, situation and/or effect: Sally put on a sweater and closed the window because the weather outside was cold. The man banged on the door which resulted in a hoarse cry from within. Suzie yelled at her mother, “If I eat this donut, then I’ll get fat, and if I get fat, I will not fit in my dress, and if I can’t wear my dress, I will never go to the prom!” A typhoon hit Manila, and, as a result, ISM was closed.  John will eat his dinner before he brushes his teeth. It’s such a great evening, I think we should go for a walk.
