  2. Leviticus 21 • General Laws for Priests • Read V1 - 9 • Who is the audience God is addressing? V1 • What do these verses illustrate regarding “set apart” or “be holy because I am holy?” • Illustrates the purity and separation from sin that was to characterize the priesthood; death is a picture of sin’s result in this world • Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. • Prohibition regarding dead bodies wasn’t just about touching a dead body, but even being in the same room as a dead body or walking over a grave or touching a tomb • What burial rites could a priest could participate? Not participate?

Who is a priested prohibited to marry? • V 9 Any correlation to Leviticus 19: Don’t make your daughter a harlot? • NOTE: The shaving of heads, beards, cutting of flesh and making daughters harlots considered pagan practices

Nadab and Abahu • Read Matthew 26: 65; where does the high priest stand regarding this decree and Jesus’ trial? • What is the correlation of virginity vs a harlot for a wife and holiness? • A harlot is a reminder to the Israelites of cultic prostitution in Canaan; their promised land, the land they are soon to enter

Leviticus 21 • Read 16 – 24 • Ministering priest must be free from physical defects • Why does God specify that no priest with a defect may approach to offer the bread to God? • Offering: • No American Disabilities Act or EO/EEO laws, just God’s Law • What can we conclude is God’s standard for those who would come into His presence in service as priests? Be free of physical defect = Free of spiritual defect? • “Eat the bread of His God”: What does this indicate about priestly families? They could be supported by the priesthood; were barred from priestly service but not from fellowship with God

No; just made ceremonially unclean for a period of time • What time of day do Jews start their days? Sundown • With description in these verses, how could a Jew start the new day? Clean, pure to the Lord • Read Lamentations 3: 32 • Example of Restoration? • To what is the Old Covenant pointing? • Read Colossians 2: 16-17 and Hebrews 8: 4-5; 10:1; James 4: 8

Slaves considered and treated largely as family

The priests • What does the unblemished bull or goat tell us about God’s nature? He wants our best, not our cast-offs; He wants our bests. • Read Matthew 21: 12 – 13 • Read Malachi 1: 7 - 8 • Do you recall the significance of the 8th day a woman giving birth to a child? • Who or what does the animal without blemish foreshadow?
