Degree Components: “UG 5” Requirements English Language Enhancement CAES1000 Core University English (6 credits) • to be taken in Year 1, 1st or 2nd semester • Exempted from the course if: • attained Level 5** in HKDSE English Language Paper • tested by CAES to be of a native English speaker standard • achieved an overall IELTS score of no less than a 7.5 and no less than a 7 on the Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing Tests • achieved an overall TOEFL Internet Based Test score of no less than 102 and no less than a 27 on the writing section and no less than a 24 on the speaking, listening and reading sections • achieved a level 5 (in either the SL or HL paper) at A1 English in the International Baccalaureate • achieved an SAT essay score of no less than 10 and no less than 700 on the Critical Reading and Writing Tests • achieved a score of no less than 5 on the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition or Literature and Composition Tests • and must take a 6-credit elective course in lieu of this course

Degree Components:“UG 5” Requirements Chinese Language Enhancement CBBA9003 Practical Chinese for BEcon/BEcon&Fin/BSc(QFin) students (6 credits) • to be taken in Year 3, 1st semester • For students from the mainland, instead of CBBA9003: • CUND9002 Practical Chinese and Hong Kong Society or • CUND9003 Cantonese for non-Cantonese speaking students • Students who did not study Chinese language during their secondary school education: • can apply to Faculty Office for exemption from CBBA9003; or • need to take a credit-bearing Cantonese or Putonghua course offered by the School of Chinese for international students

BEcon/BEcon&FinProgramme Requirements Mathematics Requirement (for JUPAS students) All BE/BEF students: • have to pass either MATH1011 University Mathematics I orMATH1013 University Mathematics II Students with Level 3 or above in HKDSE Math Extended Module 1 or 2: • are required to take MATH1013 Students with Level 3 or above in HKDSE Math: • are required to take MATH1011 Students who have taken courses equivalent to MATH1013 : • exemptionfrom the mathematics requirement; and • must take a free elective of the same credit value in lieu of this course

BEcon/BEcon&FinProgramme Requirements Mathematics Requirement (for Non-JUPAS students) MATH1011 University Mathematics I (6 credits) • Provide basic knowledge of mathematics • Recommended course for students with: • IB Mathematics (SL) / Mathematical Studies (SL) • GCE Mathematics (AL) • GSAT (Mathematics) • SAT II (Mathematics Level 1 or 2) MATH1013 University Mathematics II (6 credits) • Provide basic knowledge of calculus and some linear algebra • Recommended course for students with: • AP calculus AB/BC • IB Mathematics (HL) / Further Mathematics (HL) • Gao Kao Mathematics 高考數學（理科） • GCE Further Mathematics (AL) / Pure Mathematics (AL)

BEcon/BEcon&FinProgramme Requirements Mathematics Requirement Non-JUPAS and Mainland students who possess qualifications that are NOT listed are requiredto consult teachers in the Department of Mathematics: Non-Mainland students: Dr. Y.M. Chan (ymchan@maths.hku.hk) Mainland students: Dr. C.W. Wong (cwwongab@hku.hk) Completed mathematics course selection forms and the syllabi of the mathematics exams are required for teachers’ consideration and endorsement. For details, please refer to the instructions sent to you by email.

BEcon/BEcon&FinProgramme Requirements Statistics Requirement All BE/BEF students have to pass one ofthe following: • ECON1280 Analysis of Economic Data • STAT1603 Introductory Statistics • STAT2601 Probability and Statistics I Note: Most BE/BEF students would not be able to take STAT2601 as listed in the syllabus to fulfill the statistics requirement because the offering department has added a new prerequisite of MATH2014 Multivariable calculus and linear algebra to STAT2601 which is applicable to 2014-15intake.

BEcon/BEcon&FinProgramme Requirements Statistics Requirement If you plan to take a second major in statistics or risk management You are not recommended to take STAT1603 as it is not listed in the syllabuses of statistics major or RM major. Also, STAT1603 and STAT2601 are mutually exclusive. If you plan to take a minor in statistics or risk management • While it is possible to use STAT1603 to fulfill part of the introductory requirement of the minor, the choice of advanced-level statistics courses will be limited. • If you take STAT1603 (instead of STAT2601), you may find it difficult to understand the advanced-level statistics courses if your pursue minor in statistics or risk management. Other cases Take either ECON1280 or STAT1603 to fulfill the statistics requirement

English Proficiency Test All BE, BEF, QFin student (4-year cohort) are required to take an English Proficiency Test (a graduation requirement): • Entrancetestin Year 1 • Exit test in the finalyear of study Entrance Test for Freshmen in 2014-15: Tests will be held in the last two weeks of September 2014 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm Test details to be confirmed by email

BSc(QFin) Programme Requirements Overview BSc(QFin) Year 1 students need to take: • Introductory Microeconomics (6 credits) • Introductory Macroeconomics (6 credits) • Introduction to Financial Accounting (6 credits) • Corporate Finance (6 credits) • University Mathematics II (6 credits) • Multivariable calculus (6 credits)

STAT2601 & MATH2211 • The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science has newly added a prerequisite of MATH2014 Multivariable calculus and linear algebra to STAT2601 Probability & Statisticsfor students admitted in 2014 or thereafter. • In view of the change, all BSc(QFin) students of 2014-15 intake could use MATH2211 to fulfill the prerequisite requirement for STAT2601.  • You would have to take and pass MATH2211 prior to your enrolment in STAT2601.

  25. Pre-registration of Year 1 Core Courses The Faculty Office will help all Year 1 students to pre-register the core courses. No add/drop of courses after the add/drop period. If students have genuine need to make amendments to the pre-registered course enrolment or late add/drop requests, please send a request with good justification to Miss Karen Ho(E&F – hohst@hku.hk) or Ms. Karen Wu (QFin – karenck@hku.hk) of the FBE for consideration.

Second Major / Minor Declaring Second Major / Minor Declareduring the August pre-enrolment period before the start of 3rd year of study (i.e. August 2016) Finalize declaration during the September course selection period in the 1st semester of final year of study (i.e. August 2017); no further change will be accepted afterwards Make sure you have declared your major/minor via SIS before your course enrolment

Second Major / Minor Credits Required – Second Major For a SecondMajor: 72 – 96 credits FBE majors available for BEand QFin students: • Business Design & Innovation, Human Resources Management, Marketing, Information Systems, Computer Science • Wealth Management (BE only),Finance (BE only),Quantitative Finance (BE only), Economics (QFin only) Offering Faculties of non-FBE majors available for BE and QFin students: • Arts, Education, Engineering, Science, Social Sciences Please check with the offering Faculties for the pre-requisite requirements of programmes

Other Requirements & Regulations Study Load Normal load is 30 credits per semester (and a maximum load of 36 credits per semester with the approval of the Board of Faculty), 2 semesters per year and graduation in 4 years Need a minimum of 240 credits, fulfill all requirements and achieve a cumulative GPA of 1.0 or above to graduate Take a minimum of 60 credits and a maximum of 72 credits in each academic year Take a minimum of 24 credits and a maximum of 36 credits in each regular semester

Other Requirements & Regulations Study Load Can take more than 72 credits in an academic year with the approval by the Board of Faculty, provided that the total no. of credits taken does not exceed 288 credits By including the courses taken to make up the failed credits, the total no. of credits should not exceed 432 credits

  35. Other Requirements & Regulations Leave of Absence Sickleave of 3 to 7 days: • inform the Faculty Office in writing a.s.a.p. Sickleave of more than 7 days: • apply to the Faculty Office in writing together with a medical certificate Non-medical reasons for more than 2 consecutive days: • apply to the Faculty Office in writing a.s.a.p. with supporting documentation • Note: permission granted only in exceptional cases

  36. Other Requirements & Regulations Absence from Exams For Medical Reason: • Need to submit the “Form of Medical Certificate” endorsed by your physician to the Director of University Health Service immediately for approval • Will be determined by the Board of Examiners on whether a supplementary exam will be granted • The supplementary exam is given only once. Failure to take the supplementary exam for whatever reason will result in failure in the final exam. For Non-medical Reason: • State your case clearly with supporting documentation to the Faculty Office for consideration • Note: seldom accepted by the Board of Examiners

  37. Other Requirements & Regulations Academic Misconduct Plagiarism and cheating are extremely serious intellectual crimes and will not be tolerated. Students engaging in plagiarismor cheating in examination or other means of assessment would be: • given a fail grade automatically • penalized at the discretion of the Board of Examiners • taken to the HKU Disciplinary Committee • penalized with discontinuation of study

  38. Other Requirements & Regulations Discontinuation Students will receive a warning letter if semester GPA is lower than 1.0 in any semester Students shall be recommended for discontinuationif they: • fail to complete 36 credits in total over a period of two consecutive semesters(not including the summer semester), except where they are not required to complete 36 credits in the two given semesters; or • fail to achieve an average semester GPA of 1.0 in two consecutive semesters (not including the summer semester); or • exceed the maximum registration period of 6 years
