  2. We are learning to • Use speech marks correctly in our writing.

  3. Why do we need them? Speech marks are used to show the words people are saying. This is also called direct speech. “You wrote an awesome recount Laura,” said Mr de Beer.

  4. Speech marks go around the words spoken. • Use a capital letter to begin the spoken words. “I am in year 7,” said Harry. • Use a comma after the spoken. • End the sentence with a full stop.

  5. Let’s practice as a class: we are having a hamburger for lunch said Ceri why are you standing asked Paige mr De Beer whispered we have to hide

  6. What about questions? “What are you doing?” asked Taylor. Replace the comma with the question mark (or exclamation mark)

  7. Exercise Put speech marks around the spoken words.

  9. “I bet you cant guess my mum’s name,” said Jaime to the class. “Is it Buttercup?” asked Nick. “Sorry, guess again,” said Jaime. “I know what it is,” said Mr. de Beer. “It’s Rapunzel, or maybe Thumbelina?” “No, no,” laughed Jaime. “You’ll never guess it!” Everyone in the class tried to guess Jaime’s mum’s name, but nobody was even close. “Do you give up?” asked Jaime. “Yes,” they all yelled at once. “My mum’s name is Uneek,” said Jaime.
