  4. The Rules of Direct Speech • Use speech marks around the words that are spoken out loud: “How are you feeling today?” asked James. • Start a new line for each new speaker: “I’m fine thanks. What about you?” replied Fran. “Feeling much better after a good night’s sleep.” • The first word of the speech must have a capital letter: “Did you see that programme on TV last night?” • You must use a punctuation mark to separate the spoken and unspoken words: “My mum said I couldn’t stay up to watch the rest of the game last night,” complained Gary. • The punctuation marks should go inside the speech marks: “I don’t believe it!”

What is wrong with these sentences? • “Charlotte said, It was a lovely service last Sunday.” • “we should try to see each other again soon” said Hannah. • What time does the film start? asked Alasdair. • “How old were you when you first started playing the piano?” asked Calum. “I was three,” replied Harry. • Wow”! gasped Claire, “What a stunning view”. • “As she looked longingly back at the departing ferry, Gaia said, “I wish we could have stayed for just one more day.

  6. Time to Practice TASK • Read the passage from Harry Potter. • Using the rules for direct speech, correctly punctuate the passage. • Don’t forget about taking a new line for each new speaker. • Watch out for spelling error!

  8. Better words than... SAID Make a vocabulary poster that shows off all the other words you could use instead of ‘said’.

  9. HOMEWORK Complete the direct speech quiz! Put the speech marks in the correct places and identify correct and incorrect uses of speech marks.
