Pieter Bruegel il Vecchio (Brabante 1525-30 - Bruxelles 1569)Pittore, disegnatore e incisore, il più grande artista della prima metà del Cinquecento nel nord Europa.La documentazione circa la sua carriera è piuttosto scarsa. Nel 1551 fu iscritto nella Gilda dei pittori di Anversa e cominciò a lavorare per il mercante di stampe Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Nel 1552 intraprese un viaggio in Francia e in Italia, soggiornò a Roma e si spinse fino in Sicilia.L'esperienza dell'attraversamento delle Alpi colpisce Bruegel molto più di qualsiasi opera artistica, "inghiottì tutte le montagne e le rocce e al suo ritorno le risputò fuori sulle tele e sulle tavole".Il risultato è la serie di stampe oggi note come i Grandi paesaggi (1555-58), dodici spettacolari vedute di montagna. Presunto autoritratto di Pieter Bruegel.
