    1. Ongoing PrEP Trials

    2. PrEP Trials Halted/Cancelled

    3. Questions yet to answer Other populations (women and IDU) Drug resistance? Role of industry in this research? What are the next steps if the research says it works? What are the next steps if the research says it doesnt work?

    4. Response to HIV/AIDS Script: When most people think of the continuum of HIV services, they tend to think about HIV prevention, HIV testing and treatment and care. Id actually like to expand this continuum.Script: When most people think of the continuum of HIV services, they tend to think about HIV prevention, HIV testing and treatment and care. 5. Comprehensive Response Script: Instead, Id propose that a comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS includes prevention education and interventions, HIV testing, access to treatment and care, research into new technologies and social justice.Script: Instead, Id propose that a comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS includes prevention education and interventions, HIV testing, access to treatment and care, research into new technologies and social justice.

    6. New Technologies New Treatments Microbicides Vaccines PrEP Male Circumcision Script: When I talk about research into new technologies, Im talk specifically about development of new and better treatments, microbicides and vaccines. As for social justice, I find that many people who come to this work, do so out of a concern for their own communities. HIV is a social justice issue as demonstrated by who is most impacted by the epidemic people of color, women, sexual minorities, the poor, drug users basically the powerless.Script: When I talk about research into new technologies, Im talk specifically about development of new and better treatments, microbicides and vaccines. 7. HIV/AIDS Tool Kit Script: Heres another way to think about. If we look at our tool kit for HIV/AIDS we can see what we have available to people right now in black. The red are tools currently in research. We can see prior to exposure to HIV we currently only have education and behavior change available for people. Wouldnt it be great if we could also offer a preventive vaccine or pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) as additional ways to prevent HIV infection? (PrEP research is looking at whether or not use of HIV antiretrovirals daily by HIV negative people will reduce their risk of becoming infected) At the point of transmission, we have male and female condoms available, ARV therapy to prevention mother to child transmission and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) where people who have been exposed to HIV take a months worth of ARVs to blast the HIV in hopes to keep it from taking hold in the body. Wouldnt it be great if we could also offer people a microbicide as another tool for HIV prevention. (Microbicides are substances that could be apply topically to the genitals to prevention HIV infection) After infection we have ARV therapy, care, and education/behavioral change (prevention for positives). Wouldnt it be great if we could also offer people a therapeutic vaccine as another way of maintaining their health? Really, research is about maximizing the chinese buffet of HIV/AIDS tools so that people can pick and choose as many options that work best for them.Script: Heres another way to think about. 8. Treatment Analogy Script: The reality is that the best response to HIV/AIDS is a comprehensive response that includes prevention, testing, treatment/care, research and social justice. Its a lot like AIDS treatments we know that mono-therapy (or just using one AIDS drug) is not the best. HIV develops mutations and eventually the drug no longer works. Instead we use combination therapy because the best way to control the virus in someones body is to attack it at multiple points during its replication process. Similarly, we need to attack the HIV/AIDS pandemic at multiple points if we are going to defeat it.Script: The reality is that the best response to HIV/AIDS is a comprehensive response that includes prevention, testing, treatment/care, research and social justice.
