Our Rising Disease Burden Cancer: • 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime • Cancer incidence from 1 in 20 to 1 in 8 in last 40 years Asthma: • Asthma incidence in the U.S. has more than doubled since 1980 Diabetes: • Between 1997 and 2004, diabetes incidence increased 45% among 18-44 years old Endometriosis: • Once thought to be very rare, now affects 10-15% of all women of reproductive age in the U.S. Learning Disabilities: • Affects 5-10% of children in U.S. public schools Obesity: • 127 million people are overweight; 60 million are obese • ALL THESE DISEASES ARE NOW LINKED TO ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES
