  1. War and Revolution Tara Madsen

  2. Road to WWI • Rivalries between European Nations grew during the era of nationalism • Europe’s great powers divided into two alliances: Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy Triple Entente- Russia, France, Britain • Another issue- not all ethnic groups had a country of their own

  3. Militarism • The growth of mass armies after 1900 heightened tensions in Europe • Most western countries had established conscription (military draft) • European countries had policies of militarism meaning that they were aggressively preparing for war.

  4. Outbreak of War • By 1914, Serbia was determined to create an independent Slavic state in the Balkans… Austria was equally determined to not let that happen…. Serbia was supported by Russia • On 28 June 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand visited Sarajevo, Bosnia with his wife Sofia. (He was the heir to the Austrian Empire) • A Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand assassinated the Archduke and his wife

  5. Recap= Austria and Serbia do not like each other • Austrian heir visits Bosnia and while there a Serbian terrorist group assassinates both he and his wife. • Austria is VERYYYYYY angry and they blamed Serbia for this incident. • ***REMEMBER*** I said that Serbia was backed by RUSSIA!!!

  6. SOOOOO… Austria, who was kind of scared of Russia asked Germany to back them up… Germany agreed. • 28 July 1914, Austria declared war on Serbia • As soon as Austria declared war, the Russian Czar, Nicolas II, mobilized his troops. • Germany warned him… he ignored Germany's request so then they also got involved.

  7. Here is where it gets tricky… Germany could not only declare war on Russia… their military plan also caused them to declare war on France… In order to get troops where they needed to go, they had to go through Belgium by force. Belgium’s ally was Great Britain… so then Great Britain declared war on Germany for picking on Belgium

  8. WAR • PROPAGANDA • TRENCH WARFARE • WAR OF ATTRITION • TOTAL WAR
