  1. SCC’s International Student Program (ISP)

  2. The What: Stage I • Serves F-1 Visa students • Minimum of 12 units • Interested in credit courses • Hopes of transfer to a four year institution

The What: Stage II • Implement SCC’s American Language Institute (ALI) • Serves credit students as well as not-for-credit students • Funding is similar to our community services program where students pay for courses • Need a minimum of 25 (or 50) students to break even • These classes will be primarily in non-credit • A one month program for visitors • Intensive ACE/ESL classes that focus on conversational English (speaking and writing) • Includes cultural activities/events in afternoons/on Fridays • Components will expand to serve F-1 Visa students

The What: Stage III • Not-for-credit, community service type courses • Continue and grow classes in the summer for teenage students • Leave curriculum to the faculty • Grow the program into an intensive education program • Hope is to grow this to include not-for-credit adults—business folk interested in immersion in the English language and the American culture • Diana Babayan is already looking into creating/revising curriculum • Craig Rutan and I are also involved in the process

The Who • Currently continuing to foster relationship with Stephen Zhang • Current ISP students will come from China • Current credit and non-credit faculty will have the right of first refusal • Will be paid like contract employees • Will need one ISP Coordinator by 14/15 academic year • Will need an adjunct Counselor by the same time • Will also need faculty—credit and non-credit

  6. Enrollment Priority • Current SCC students will not be displaced • ISP students will be encouraged to take lower enrolled classes: afternoons and evenings • More classes will be offered • Current students may have more opportunities to take the additional classes

  7. Funding • Initial start-up funds from Chancellor • Funding for this program will NOT dip into general funds • Seeking a loan with the SCC Foundation to be paid back in 2015 • With a minimum of 25 (or 50) students, the program can pay for itself
