  1. DEATH

  2. “Do you see that chimney over there? See it? Do you see those (Yes, we did see the flames.) Over there-that's where you're going to be taken. That's your over there.“ pg .17 Do you see that chimney over there? See it? Do you see those flames? (Yes, we did see the flames.) Over there-that's where you're going to be taken. That's your grave, over there.“ pg 17 The quote above speaks for itself. This shows the theme of death because as soon as the Jews arrived at the camp, they were told that they were going to die. The officer pointed out and showed them the furnaces and told them that they're going there…To BURN.

  3. “ Babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as targets. This was in the forest of Galicia, near Kolomaye.” pg 4 This quote is sad but true. Innocent, little babies both boys and girls, were thrown into the air and shot by German soldiers with machine guns. This horrific even took place in the forest called Galicia.

  4. “ To hang a boy in front of thousands of spectators was no light matter. The head of the camp read the verdict. All eyes were on the child. He was lividly pale, almost calm, biting his lips. The gallows threw its shadow over him.” pg. 61 This quote is very sad. A young boy, (about our age) was hung in front of the whole camp. The reason for hanging him in front of the whole camp was to scare the rest of prisoners. By allowing them to see such an event in front of there very eyes mad them be careful of the things they did and said.

  5. “ Men to the right! Women to the left!” pg.23 This quote is simple yet powerful. Just the words “ Men to the right! Women to the left!” determined your fate. It determined whether or not you are going to live. This quote always portrays separation. Many families were split up and never united again just by those words.

  6. "After my father's death, nothing could touch me any more." This quote is powerful. I say this because this shows the change in Wiesel. After his fathers death he feels as if he has nothing else to lose. Now that his father is gone, he becomes almost lifeless and doesn’t really care about anything anymore.

  7. “I told him that I did not believe that they could burn people in our age, that humanity would never tolerate it . . .” This quote shows a sign of hope. Many heard the rumors of what went on at camps such as burning people Although this was true, many did not believe that humanity on a whole would tolerate such an act. They were wrong..

  8. “Everybody around us was weeping. Someone began to recite Kaddish, the prayer for the dead. I don't know whether, during the history of the Jewish people, men have ever before recited Kaddish for themselves.” This quote represents the lost of hope. All the Jews began to recite the prayer of death. This shows that they knew that they were going to die and there was no chance of survival.

  9. "The student of the Talmud, the child that I was, had been consumed in the flames. There remained only a shape that looked like me. A dark flame had entered my soul and devoured it" This quote shows change. Due to the horrifying events, Wiesel has lost his inner pride, strength, and sense of stability. His soul is crushed and has been taken over by the Nazis .

  10. “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky”. This quote represents pain. It show that Wiesel was scared and will never forget what he saw. Those horrifying memories are engraved in his heart and mind.

  11. "We were all going to die here. All limits had been passed. No one had any strength left. And again the night would be long." This quote shows a lost of hope. In a hopeless time, night seems to stretch on forever. Darkness often can be equated with lost of will and hope. Everyone has given up.
