  1. DEATH BY EVAN MACH AND MIKE LALLIER

  2. “The two adults were no longer alive…but the third rope was still moving; being so light, the child was still alive.” p. 56 • This quote supports the theme of death because the Nazi’s showed no mercy towards the prisoners even if they were young children. This quote shows how no matter how hard you worked or how strong you were you can not escape the reality of being selected for death at anytime.

  3. “Eight words spoken quietly, indifferently, without emotion…yet that was the moment from I parted with my mother.” p. 32 This shows how families were separated during the holocaust. It was very hard time for families to lose their loved ones to extermination camps and knowing they will never see them again. This not only effected the people physically but mentally as well.

  4. “They were burning something. A lorry drew up at the pit and delivered its load. Little children, babies.” p.30 • This quote goes to show the brutality the SS Officers provoked when carrying the final solution. The fact that they killed little children in front of the others was an intimidation factor.

  5. “Here, you have got to work. If not, you will go straight to the furnace.” p.36 • When the Jewish people arrived the German officers didn’t care about the well being of the prisoners, only the amount of production of he/she could put into hard labor before they die. The furnaces put fear in all the prisoners if they didn’t work hard enough.

  6. “Those whose numbers I call will not be going to work this morning; they’ll stay behind in camp.” p.70 • Near the end of the World War 2 the Germans began making more and more selections to began to eliminate all the prisoners that “useless” to the German labor and keeping the stronger prisoners for as long as possible before they to will die.

  7. “When the selection came, he was condemned in advance, offering his own neck to the executioner.”p.73 • As the prisoners realized that hope was far beyond grasp some of them lost faith and the will to live. Just like Rabi Drumer realized that there was no hope for the prisoners he offered his life at the next selection.

  8. “Germany doesn’t need sick Jews. Germany doesn’t need me…take my advice: get out of the hospital before the next selection.” p.74 • This showed that if you become sick they would do the bare minimum to keep you alive. Just like the Hungarian Jew in the hospital bed next Elie when he said that the SS Officers were making their selections more frequent and precise because the sick Jews served no use to them.

  9. “Run faster. If you don’t want go on, let others go past.” p.83 • This quote also shows that if you were one of the weak that the other prisoners did not want you around to slow down the production of the group.

  10. “He had wanted to get rid of his father! He felt that his father was getting weak, he had sought to get rid of the burden.” p.87 • This shows that the more you became involved in the routine of being a prisoner the more you came involved in yourself and not looking out for anyone else that are important to you. For example when the kid saw his father falling farther behind the group he ran ahead to free himself from the burden of his father.

  11. “I climbed into the bunk, above my father, who was still alive…I awoke on January 29th at dawn. In my fathers place lay another invalid.” p. 106 • Just like Elie many people lost important family members without having the chance to say goodbye to each other. This quote shows how Elie and his father went through everything and all it took was one night for them to be separated.
