  2. LINE UNIT - Assignment requires you to create a contourline still life drawing of 2 common objects from the art room ( or brought in from home). Pick an interesting, detailed and complex objects. • DRAWING MUST CONTAIN LINE QUALITY. • DRAWING MUST USE LINE ONLY! CROSS HATCHING AND MARK MAKING IS ACCEPTABLE BUT NOT REQUIRED. • DRAWING MUST CONTAIN AN INTERESTING COMPOSITION. • All views of the objects must interact with edge of the paper. • Drawing must be from observation. • You must use ink for your finished drawing. Sketch original in pencil first. • BEFORE YOU START-You must hand in 4 small preliminarily sketches first. One will be a 1)blind contour drawing, second 2) gesture drawing and last 3,4) two different compositional sketches.

Approach every drawing with careful thought. • What makes sense with the object you have chosen –a vertical or horizontal paper? • Draw the views large and fill the entire page. • Use your viewfinder to help with composition and cropping. • Block-in entire object LIGHTLY in pencil first. • Create interesting negative spaces. • Make corrections. • Darken lines in ink. • Create depth and interest through line quality. Do NOT create a monotone drawing where all the lines are the same. Remember light, thin lines push back in space while dark, thick lines push forward. • Draw lines only do NOT fill in or shade areas. Create detail and form with line only.

  11. Mark making -using marks to create dark areas, texture and illusion of form, direction.

  12. Blind contour drawing- drawing technique where you look at the object only. NO LOOKING AT THE PAPER! Draw slowly and use your eyes to view all the small changes that occur within the object. Used to study object and train eye to see.
