  2. Question Presented: #8 • Is Nick Carraway a suitable biographer to James Gatz in The Great Gatsby? Consider Nick’s development and his presentation of his subject throughout the novel in your response.

Points to consider in a good biographer • What is a biographer? • someone who writes an account of a person's life • Honesty • Style of speech • Relation to Gatsby (close friend) • Lack of Conflicts of interest and/or biased writing • Length of time around Gatzby • Including good and bad times

  4. Points to consider in a good biographer • A good biographer is someone who can write an accurate account of a person's life, which includes all aspects (whether good or bad), from an impartial point of view.

  5. Is Nick a good biographer? • We believe that Nick Carraway IS a good biographer. • He exhibits the following: • Reserves judgment • Excellent relation with his subject • Understandable style of speech • Around Gatsby during good and bad times • Honesty?

  6. Honesty In Question • Throughout the entire novel, Nick provides vivid descriptions of the events that happened. It would be hard to say that he lied or falsified the details, since he included many other people in the novel. If one suspects him of lying about something, one can always go and ask those people. • Keep in mind Nick is the only narrator!

  7. Nick’s relationship with Gatsby • Throughout the book, Nick’s opinion of Gatsby develops as he learns more about him. • At first, he doubts his claims • However, he soon learns to respect him • In the end, he is one of the few at his funeral

  8. Quotes to consider • P5: “In consequence I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has..” • P64: “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.”
