  1. The New NCES Analysis Tool http://nces.ed.gov/datalab/ Illinois AIR, November 4,5 2010 Gerry McLaughlin, DePaul University

  2. Underlying Data •  POSTSECONDARY •  Students • Beginning college students • All undergraduates • Graduating college seniors • Graduate students • Faculty

  3. Basic Statistics: Tables and Charts

  4. Gives description of data set Look up variables and methodology

  5. Describes the different alternatives Sample size Provides example tables

  6. Pick a data group and it shows variables Search for variables

  7. Select variables – rows sum to 100% Can download or save Shows decisions of groups in the title

  8. Can modify rows, columns and subgroups at any point in the process

  9. The New NCES Analysis Tool

  10. Requires Login (free) Access to saved material Extensive Training

  11. Example of Training

  12. Other Analyses From the Regression option Pick a data set

  13. Correlations

  14. Can expand lists of variables Can add additional variables Can explore variables

  15. Create subgroups by using the filters

  16. Can set continuous variables up as categorical by specifying own ranges Start by dragging continuous variable to the matrix and get option on how want to use. Select categorical

  17. Can save, download results or print

  18. Collapse All and expand Descriptive Statistics Categorical variables are frequencies

  19. Can navigate back to regression or create a new regression Get a full range of output options Get a full range of statistics

  20. Caution • Weighted stratified random sampling was used to conduct the surveys. • This oversampled smaller groups to get a sufficient size in the survey. • The result is weighted estimates of standard errors. • Serious use requires reading the methodology for the survey and using they right sample.
