  1. VIDEO ARCHIVING: ON THE WAY TO THE IT-WORLD Franz Pavuza, Julia Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv Austrian Academy of Sciences Vienna, Austria

  2. A short look back… JTS 2004, Toronto, Our issues were: *) content preservation ( > digitization) *) linear, uncompressed archiving of analog sources *) PC-based equipment (hard- and software). *) proprietary/open file formats *) final storage media, data integrity *) costs *) workflow, metadata handling Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  3. THE PC-BASED INGEST STATION FOR LINEAR ARCHIVING *) Basic PC-Hardware: cheaper and/or faster than 2004 *) Standard hard disks now are large enough to accommodate typical uncompressed video sequences; fast enough when configured in RAIDs *) More vendors of capture cards for uncompressed signals on the market; lower costs for the cards Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  4. Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  5. A short look back… JTS 2004, Toronto, Our issues were: *) content preservation ( > digitization) *) linear, uncompressed archiving of analog sources *) PC-based equipment (hard- and software) *) proprietary/open file formats. *) final storage media, data integrity *) costs *) workflow, metadata handling Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  6. Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  7. PROPRIETARY OR OPEN FILE (CONTAINER-)FORMAT ? *) MXF (Material Exchange Format) as an open, accepted and recommended container format for essence (audio, video, still pictures, text..) and metadata recommended by SMPTE/EBU welcomed by archivists (digital “all in one – object”) *) JPEG2000 as a modern format for the essence (video footage) within MXF already standard for some HD-Cinema formats lossless compression available intra-frame supports processing *) Both MXF and JPEG2000 now available (also in combination; see presentations at JTS 2007!) Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  8. A short look back… JTS 2004, Toronto, Our issues were: *) content preservation ( > digitization) *) linear, uncompressed archiving of analog sources *) PC-based equipment (hard- and software) *) proprietary/open file formats *) final storage media, data integrity. *) costs *) workflow, metadata handling Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  9. FINAL STORAGE MEDIUM *) LTO (open, well defined into the future; reliable, fast; choice of manufacturers for drives and tapes) *) Start with LTO1 (2002), switch to LTO3 (2005); Migration period covers 2-3 generations of the tape family *) Problem: Verification (time consuming, external devices only as temporary solution); manufacturers of tapes and drives reluctant to release data for access to monitoring- chip and software *) Open backup software with verification encouraged Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  13. SOME COSTS…. (“Small Archive Solution”) 2004 2007 Remark Personal Computer € 2000.- € 2000.- (3-fold improved) Capture Card € 12000.- € 2000.- ++ (more vendors) Harddisk-Array (RAID 0) (250 GByte) € 2500.- (550 GByte) € 2000.- LTO Tape (1 hour uncompr.) € 22.- € 10.- (4x speed) Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto

  15. WORKFLOW, METADATA *) Still no dedicated software for video archiving (conventional editing software instead). *) Ingest, backup to LTO block capture station (Transfer of job to other machine: slow) *) Inclusion of metadata possible with new station (MXF/JPEG2000 based system) *) LTO data verification desirable (preferred: background operation) *) Archive’s database still handled separately *) Operating and backup software still proprietary! (Open Source Digital Archival System suggested by UNESCO MoW Sub-Committee on Technology) Pavuza/Ahamer Phonogrammarchiv, Vienna JTS 2007, Toronto
