Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 • $ 1 Billion in fed. Funds to benefit poor children • Also, next year, Higher Education Act – fed. Scholarships for college
Immigration Act of 1965 • Ended quotas (First major immigration act, and reversed, the 1924 (National Origins Act, which had limmited people from certain countries, dating back to 1890 quotas) • 20k in per country • “refugees” • EFFECT = high volume immigration, more immigrants from Korea, China, Phil., Dom. Rep., Cambodia and Middle East
Civil Rights Act of 1968 • Fair Housing Act – sought to eliminate racial discrimination in the real estate market. • trying to end de facto segregation via residential housing patterns • (some areas never seemed to have any blacks living there? I wonder why?)

Great Society? • Believed to cut Poverty in 1/3rd • Incredible spending by govt. • Created continued debate over federal powers expanding (more of the New Deal?) • “show down on the battlefields of Vietnam” – MLK, Jr. • Great success with Civil Rights Acts • Ultimate, irony is the Vietnam War ended up costing LBJ the “Great Society”!
