  10. Under the leadership of Shah Ardalan, CEO at Lone Star College, University Park; The Lone Star College System has volunteered to be the first pilot site and will be the primary focus of the first year of activity. However, institutional participants representing systems of higher education other than Lone Star can participate to compare their requirements and prepare for future pilots.

  11. Why Lone Star College System As one of the most innovative and comprehensive community colleges in America, Lone Star College System (LSCS) is the perfect pilot and sponsor. With five colleges, two university centers, six additional centers, and 11 Independent School Districts, LSCS enrolled over 85,000 students in Fall 2011. In addition to its quality programs, large geographic service area and diverse student demographics, LSCS is also recognized for its innovative partnerships and initiatives. It was recently selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to lead a statewide alliance of top-performing Texas colleges representing one third – or 235,000 – of all community college students in the state.

  14. Pre-EPS ERA Education Position Mismatch Degree-audit limited to inside college view My Dream Career Path Financial Requirement Industry Needs, Requirements Destination Educational Choices Educational Achievements Time

  15. Post-EPS ERA Completion Alignment Degree ‘Completion’ Audit becomes EDUFAX which is tied to the person, industry, and education as a whole Financial Requirements, My Career Path, Industry Needs and Requirements Educational Choices, Educational Qualifications Destination Time

  16. PRE-EPS ERA ISSUES POST-EPS ERA SOLUTIONS • Complete educational record set is non-exist in one location, making true education assessment invalid. • Degree audit is limited to 2-4 years of college. • Educational completeness does not map to workforce needs. • Caring parents and sponsors have no measurement to assist students. • College readiness is disconnected forcing a perceived 76% rate of failure. • High percentage of graduates have no idea what their own educational facts really are. • Unemployment is high while skilled workers are low, with no analytics to validate how to resolve the issue. • U.S. ranked 12th in education and dropping in prominence. • Standardization trump qualifications. • Administrators tempted to cheat on standards testing that are owned by the institution and sent in. Complete educational record set created and available to all who desire to be accountable. Degree audit starts being called “completion” audit and is life-long. Educational completeness is mapped to workforce through EDUFAX Caring parents and sponsors have all records to proactively assist students. College readiness is mapped to EDUFAX and provides visual analytics of success and failure. All graduates visually see what their educational facts and strengths are and how they map to the workforce. Unemployment is aligned to economy and unaffected by lack of qualified workers. EDUFAX provides alignment. U.S. ranked 12th and climbing up in prominence. Qualifications trump standardization. Administrators cannot cheat on EDUFAX documents that are based on qualifications owned by the students.

  17. LMS versus EPS: Comparison of Characteristics • LMS • Owned by institution • Poor persistence of complete data • Robust enterprise application requires Big Iron servers • Data not transferred across institutions • No user-centric operating environment • EPS • Owned by student • Permanent data repository in cloud • Collection of portable apps allowing access to cloud data • Data accessible across institutions • Like a GPS, user is central to experience

  18. Show Me the CARFAX! • Through the EPS, the user should be able to obtain a summary of his or her complete academic history. • By knowing the path of the journey to-date, the directions to any destination may be obtained, regardless of the current location. • The user should be able to customize the view into his or her own data through the assemblage of task-focused applications. • Communication with the EPS system will take place through mobile devices, again, customized to user preferences.

  19. Show Me the EDUFAX! • Just as CARFAX reports on the state of the vehicle, EDUFAX system would provide meaningful information regarding the following: • Current “state” of the student in terms of academic progress • Complete academic history including highlights and milestones of achievement • Any other items of interest and significance regarding the student’s education • By branding the system, people with an interest in a student’s accomplishments are able to call to mind quickly the tool to understand how to measure and compare where the student stands. • In being able to quickly call to mind the tool, people will be more likely to put it to good use.

  20. Identifying EPS Metadata (or Metacontent) Define categories by functional requirements: • Track and report academic progress • Provide multiple progress views based on required depth of review • Capture and display student work • Format of artifacts (text, multimedia, etc.) • Map academic pathway • Destination mapping based on current location • Alternative paths based on desired “side trips” • Consumer versus administrative Views • Institutional requirements and data integrity • Student data accessibility • Other categories
