  4. What Does Crust Look Like? EVERYTHING WE TALK ABOUT TODAY HAS TO DO WITH THE CRUST • A lot of the crust is hard to see because it is covered by soil, rock and water

  5. CRUST!!!! Rocks • Anywhere you can see rock, you are seeing the crust of the Earth!!! Three types of rocks you need to know:1. Igneous rock2. Sedimentary rock3. Metamorphic rock

  6. What is Igneous Rock? • How does it forms? Magma (lava) from volcanoes cools down • What does it look like? Glassy, Shiny, Crystals • Example: Granite, Basalt

  7. What is Sedimentary Rock? • How does it form? Sediment (rock pieces and soil) is compacted or squeezed into rock • What does it look like? Layers, Porous, often contains fossils Examples: Chalk, limestone, sandstone

  8. What is Metamorphic Rock? • How does it form? Many rocks are squeezed by pressure & heat, forming new rocks. • Deposition: Rocks/Soil is deposited. • Compaction: Rock/Soil is pushed together. • Cementation: Compacted rock is heated.

  9. What is Metamorphic Rock? • What does it look like? Bands/Stripes of light and dark, Crystals • Examples: Marble, slate

  12. Each group should have… • 1 lab sheet per person • 2 pieces of aluminum foil • 2 pieces of cardboard • 1 half sheet of scrap paper • 3 crayons • 2 pennies • 1 straw MISSING ANYTHING? Tell MS. K NOW.

  13. Thinks to know… • Instead of using a hammer, you can use a textbook, your fist, your shoe, etc. • Any time your lab sheet says “heat,” come up front to use one of the candles. • When you finish… • Conclusion activities on the back side of your lab sheet.
