Mission Statement and Verse • Martin Luther Academy exists to nurture students spiritually, emotionally, and academically. • Our school verse is Isaiah 40:31 • “…but for those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

  7. Iowa Test of Basic Skills MLA’s Average Score for the 2009-2010 School Year was just short of the 80th Percentile for Grades K-8. This is a national test taken by students in a variety of different schools. Student Norms are used for determining averages.

  8. MLA is part of NLSA • NLSA stands for Northland Lutheran School Association • Five area Lutheran Churches support the mission and ministry of MLA • St. Stephen (Liberty), King of Kings (Kansas City), Christ (Platte Woods), Trinity (Kearney), and St. John’s (Farley)

  10. New Building • As of January 1, 2011 we will be moving into our new facility at 7112 N. Overland Drive, Kansas City • We will have: • Nine classrooms (Gr. K – 8) • Media center (fully networked and on-line) • Lunchroom/kitchen (hot lunch served daily) • Gym (full sports program) • Playground

  22. Eagle’s Nest Challenge • The ultimate goal is $400,000.00 • The immediate need is $300,000.00 to finish the shell of the gym • The final need is $400,000.00 to finish the gym will all of the necessary furnishings and equipment (e.g. – basketball hoops, bleachers, volleyball equipment, etc.) • We have collected/received pledges in the amount of $272,000.00

  23. Why MLA from current parents? • Initially, we were sold on MLA’s Christian environment and location. Now that we’ve been here for 6 years – we know it was the right school choice – we feel that we are truly part of a family at MLA – the people are wonderful (staff and families). • We send our children to MLA so they can be in an educational environment that reinforces the beliefs and values that surround them at home and in church.  And we prefer the smaller class sizes compared to “mass education” with hundreds of students. • I send my children to MLA because I believe it is more academically challenging while at the same time the smaller school and class size allows individual attention and the teachers know and care for my children.  The Christian values that are taught are evident in the way the children treat each other especially how the older children care for the younger ones.

  24. Why MLA from current parents? • We transferred to MLA after trying public school. Our children are receiving a quality education and building healthy relationships with peers and teachers. The Biblical standards we practice at home are both demonstrated by the administration and echoed in the classroom. • When our oldest daughter turned two years old we felt a pull to consider a Christian school.  We weren’t sure how it would happen but the doors opened up through those years and she began school at MLA in Kindergarten.  Since then our whole family continues to grow closer together in God’s Word.  MLA has been a blessing to each one of us – even a blessing on our marriage.  Working towards the sacrifices of sending our children to MLA - God has pulled us closer to Him giving us many opportunities to trust in Him and His word.  Our prayer for our children is to be equipped beyond our own parental efforts,  to be strong in Jesus  and lean on Him at all times and for all reasons.   Martin Luther Academy is most certainly a blessing to our children. • We chose MLA to offer our child a daily experience that combines a Christian environment with a strong academic setting that focuses on each individual child. We liked the small sized classrooms and the fact that this journey is shared by other families with like values.

  28. Article by Rev. William Beckmann – “Why the Lutheran School Matters” • [T]he Reformation was as much concerned with schools and education as it was with church and home. In his letter “To the Councilmen of All Cities in Germany That They Establish and Maintain Christian Schools” in 1524, Luther pressured civic leaders as well as parents to provide Christian schools and see that children attended them. He was convinced that knowledge of the liberal arts—history, language and the like—provides the best context for the study of Scripture.

  29. Article by Rev. William Beckmann – “Why the Lutheran School Matters” • Professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, from 1920-1953, Dr. John H. C. Fritz had this to say about why he wanted a Christian school for his children: “A physician writing in the Journal of the AmericanMedical Association wrote, ‘I believe that in the child’s early start on an unbalanced diet, in the long continued total or partial absence of essential food elements, we see the explanation of many of the metabolic disorders of middle life.’ “What is true in respect to the body is true also in respect to the soul. The spiritual deficiencies and disorders in later life can, as a rule, be traced to the total or partial absence of essential elements in early training or to an unbalanced diet in early life, that is, a training which did not take care of the whole man.”

William Beckmann – “Why the Lutheran School Matters” Milo Brekke, drawing from data compiled for “A Study of Generations,” determined that students who attend Lutheran schools: Evidenced greater clarity on the way of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ; Have more biblical knowledge; Report a much fuller devotional life; Are more active in witnessing to others about Jesus and His church; Have a balanced doctrine (neither liberal nor ultra conservative); Practice reasonable respect for authority; Are more likely to be forgiving with other people, yet know that such acts will not earn them salvation.
