  1. Timeline of video gamesFrom the 1950’s to Today

  2. 1950’s • Games were invented as early as the 1950’s. • OXO a graphical version of tic-tac-toe was created in 1952 • The player would play against the computer. • In 1958 a game called ‘Tennis for two’ was made using an oscilloscope and analogue computer. • As shown by the picture at the bottom it would show a 2d court from a side angle that needed to be played over the net. • The picture to the left shows a modern reconstruction of the controller people would use to play this game.

  3. 1960’s The majority of early games ran on universities mainframe computers and were developed by individuals as a hobby. In 1961 a collection of graphical programs were created on a machine called the TX-0 • Mouse in the maze – players could place cheese and maze walls, they would then watch the mouse find the cheese. • HAX – By adjusting two switches on the console, various graphical displays and sounds could be made • TIC-TAC-TOE – Using the light pen, the user could play against a computer. Spacewar, which is credited as the first and widely available game was programmed in 1961 by a group of students at MIT. It was a game In which two players would each control a spacecraft and would fight eachother.

  4. 1970’s, The 70’s was full of Arcade games as they were getting more and more popular, It was considered the ‘Bronze age’ of games. In 1971 the American public were showed a new game called “Computer space”. However, due to its steep learning curve wasn’t very successful Atari, then released a game which became huge; pong. At this time, personal computers weren’t widespread or known instead, a lot of these games had to be played at the arcade. The next huge game was space invaders, invented in 1978 by Taito. Soon after, it was licenced for the Atari 2600.

  5. 1980’s The 80’s saw a massive growth of the game industry, with many companies cropping up. More gaming computers were also starting to be invented and becoming more powerful. • The Commodore 64 was released to the public in August 1982. It became one of the most popular home computer of its day. • Another well known console system that was created was the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) Notable games that were invented in the 1980’s included: • Final fantasy • Pac man • Metal gear

  6. 1990’s The 90’s was all about the general improvement of games. It was a time when graphics were drastically being improved, from 2d to 3d, particularly with computers having graphic cards that could host such graphics. As well as this, perhaps a bit off topic, but it also is a time when E-sports started to grow as people were finally able to play each other over the internet and games were becoming more competitive. The video game industry also matured into a form of mainstream entertainement. Perhaps the most well known game invented in the 1990’s was either dune 2 (set the standard for game mechanics for later RTS’S) or Quake created by ID software (Considered to be one of the best FPS’S of all time). However, the 90’s was also known as the decline of the arcades due to a lot of personal computers and improving Graphics. As well as this, CD’s were now being used commercially And the 90’s saw the transition into that.

  7. 20’s The 20’s involved that of the increasingly competitive market for both pc’s and consoles. Before the end of 2001, the first Xbox was created by Microsoft. In the same year, one of the most successful shooters of all time was made specifically for the Xbox (later released for PC), halo. The 20’s also saw a huge increase in online gaming. MMORPGS were starting to be made such as Runescape and the most successful game of its genre, World of Warcraft which had millions Of subscribers. Casual games were also becoming a lot more popular, such as the Sims and Facebook games like Farmville.

  8. 2010’s Considering we aren’t too far into the 2010’s quite a lot has happened. There is a big possibility in seeing the rise of the next generation consoles, however it would deeply expensive for companies to move on to the next gen simply because it would cost so much creating consoles that are graphically superior to the current ones. 2010’s also saw the introduction of the Kinect for the Xbox, which is a webcam like device which allows the tracking of the player in 3D space without a controller. Fable: The Journey was a game made by Lionhead studios which was made solely for the Xbox Kinect and can only be played if you have one.
