  8. Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city of Ethiopia, has many modern buildings, such as those shown here. An important Ethiopian economic center, the city also hosts many international African conferences.

  9. Cairo, Egypt's capital and largest city, is also the largest city in Africa and the largest city in the Middle East. The Nile River, the longest river in the world, flows northward through the Cairo metropolitan area. The river provides precious water for agriculture and industry.

  10. Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In many parts of Kinshasa, automobiles and other vehicles and pedestrians often crowd the streets.

  11. Africa is a continent of striking contrasts. About two-fifths of African people live in cities, such as Lagos, Nigeria, shown. The newer sections of many cities have hotels, tall office and apartment buildings, and large stores. The remaining three-fifths of Africans live in rural areas, mainly villages.
