Resettlement is often seen as a ‘last resort’ for both refugees and the UNHCR • Australia is a major resettlement country for refugees and many of our refugees come from Africa and South East Asia • In 2008-2009, Australia accepted 13,500 onshore and offshore refugees • For 2007-8 financial year the Australian Govt. granted 13,014 humanitarian visas

The number of refugees that Australia accepts is often referred to as a ‘quota’ and usually means the number of refugees AU is willing and able to support financially and through the services it can provide to the resettlement of refugees • Australia takes in the majority of its refugees through its Special Humanitarian Programme (SHP) • The Australia government offers many countries dealing with conflict and natural disasters relief through it’s Aid agency AusAID • The recent Malaysia agreement has created huge debate over the AU’s governments decision to deter Asylum seekers and to hold them in offshore detention centres in Malaysia

  4. Refugee Council of Australia • The Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) is the national umbrella body for refugees and the organisations and individuals who support them. It has more than 150 organisational and 500 individual members • Formed in November 1981, RCOA is a non-profit organisation . It is funded through contributions from its members and by project grants from philanthropic bodies and government agencies • RCOA's own work is centred around five key areas: policy, support for refugees, support for its members, community education and administration
