  1. “I have really discovered how beautiful science physics is and I have enjoyed every second of it” Andreas Pantelis H5C NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  2. What is HiSPARC? • An experiment to detect high energy cosmic particles and to study their origin. • A project to show high schools students a realistic picture of the work at scientific institutes, to stimulate the choice for a scientific study. NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  3. Air showers… Air showers: highest energies occur rarely (e.g. 1 event per 100 square kilometer per year) (Figure from Nagano en Watson, Rev. Mod. Phys. 72, 689 (2000)). NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  4. …air shower detection To detect cosmic showers, a network of detectors is made… GPS NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  5. …build and managed by high-school students NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  6. Status • 5 clusters • ~30 schools actively involved, ~ 10 in pipeline • More than 150 students and 50 teachers • Physics students! NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  7. Teachers “I had 4 unmotivated pupils. They participated in HiSPARC and now they are my most enthusiastic students” F. Lapoutre, Science teacher “This cooperation is just what is needed to show pupils at High School what Science is all about” B. Vrijdaghs, Science teacher NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  8. Teacher involvement • Development of educational materials (e.g. A. de Leeuw) • Electronic learning environment (J. Colle and F. Hidde) • Analysis, profielwerkstukken • Teacher network NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  9. Highlights 2004 • 22 new detector stations • 2 new LIO’s in Amsterdam • First national teachers workshop • Altran Foundation Award 2004 • Support from ‘Deltapunt’ for the development of a HiSPARC educational module (90 k€) • Support from OC&W for ‘Innovation at High Schools’ (233 k €) NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  10. High school student activities • In Nijmegen: building and analysis • In other clusters: mainly building the detector NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  11. The HiSPARC Detector From the ‘profielwerkstuk’ from Utrecht (Pieter de Goeje, Veerle Bodewes, Brend Wanders) NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten

  12. “Profielwerkstukken” • about 150 students • building detector • oscilloscope, impedance matching, fast electronics • particles, muons, cosmic rays, showers, scintillation, photo-electric effect • hardware, grinding, polishing etc. • calibrations, excel, statistics (Poisson, Gaussian distributions) • several movies and interviews • HiSPARC web sites • software development • GPS positioning • Data analysis • promotion videos etc. • 2005: Review committee and HiSPARC journal students calibrating a scintillator plate NIKHEF jaarvergadering, Ilka Tánczos & Henk Jan Bulten
