The Socialist Movement • Development of Socialist parties: • Germany: 1870s the “German Social Democratic Party” adopted Marxist ideology. • Russia: 1883 exiles in Switzerland founded the “Russian Social Democratic Party”. • France: After the Paris Commune of 1880s, socialists united in 1905 in “French Section of Workers International”. • Belgium and Austria-Hungary • Eventually these parties grew into the “Socialist International”

  3. Karl Marx and “Scientific Socialism” - Communism • 1848 – Marx published “The • Communist Manifesto” • 1864 – helps found the • “International Working • Men’s Association” • 1867 – Writes “Capital” • 1889 – The “Second • International” is formed as • a federation of socialist • parties.

  4. Revolutionary and RADICAL? …not really. • Workers won the right to vote. • Nationalism continued to grow. • Standard of living rose. • Labor union movement became successful with their focus on “bread and butter” issues.

  5. = RESULTS? • Adopted “Revisionism” • German Edward Bernstein argued in favor of “evolutionary socialism”. vs. • Moderates such as French Jean Jaures’ rejected this revisionist concept.
