    2. Key Concepts What are the three major groups of rocks? How do igneous rocks form? How are sedimentary rocks classified? How do metamorphic rocks form? How can one type of rock change into another?

    3. Classifying Rocks The properties that geologists use to identify rocks include color and crystal size. The color of a rock indicates the minerals it contains. However, because the colors of most minerals can vary, a rocks color is not always a reliable way to identify it. A better way to identify rocks is by the size of the crystals or other particles they contain.

    4. Classifying Rocks The size, shape, and arrangement of the crystals and other particles that make up a rock give the rock its texture. A rocks texture reveals what the rock is made from and how and where it formed.

    5. Key Point Rocks are classified into three major groupsigneous, sedimentary, and metamorphicbased on how they form.

    6. Igneous Rock An igneous rock is a rock that forms from magma. Magma is a mixture of molten rock and gases, including water vapor, which forms underground. Magma that flows out of volcanoes is called lava.
