  2. Simile • Ex. The puppy was as cute as a button. • Simile – Using like or as to compare 2 unlike things.

  3. Hyperbole • Ex. He is fatter than an ox. • Hyperbole – exaggerating to show strong feeling.

  4. Alliteration • Ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. • Alliteration – the repetition of the first consonant sound in words.

  5. Metaphor • Ex. Her room is a pigsty. • Metaphor – comparing two things without using like or as.

  6. Personification Ex: The flowers smiled at me. Giving human traits to objects or ideas

  7. Onomatopoeia • Ex: Woof, Meow, bang, boom • Words that represent the actual sound of something

  8. Idioms • Ex: It is raining cats and dogs outside. • Expressions that don’t mean what they say.

  9. Understatement • Ex: This won’t hurt a bit. • Expressions that have less strength than expected
